Bit disappointed from the guy who wrote Kids around 1994...

Too many drugs since then? Feels like he is still on the same level as he was almost 20 years ago. I`ve expected more from him.
The movie was done well, dont get me wrong, but when it comes to social commentary, there`s nothing deeper than it used to.
Or maybe it`s just supposed to be
- a reminder for the older generation that nothing`s really changed in the last 20 years?
- a "Kids 2" for the younger generation
???
Even if, the movie still feels a bit unneccessary, in my opinion.

This movie is better than Kids and cannot be compared to it because it's different as well in many other senses.

Spring Breakers doesn't have a message in the sense that Kids does. Spring Breakers is a dream, an ilusion from the pov of a shallow, corrupt and hedonist young person that pushes the limit of a stereotypical teenager. That's why it's been shot the way it has and that's why the reason of the absurdity of its characters. We're not suppoused to learn nothing from it, just sit and "enjoy" the trip.

Kids had a good message, but it was simplistically delivered.

At first I was going to say are you out of your mind, but then it occurred to me that this movie IS better than Kids in one way- it didn't glorify the culture it represented at all. After seeing Kids a lot of young people wanted to be like that.

None of this movies glorify this sort of behavior, if anything, main characters in Kids ended up paying a very high price for their irresponsible behavior. I understand there is a group of teens that see booze, drugs and unprotected sex as cool, but they are not the majority, and probably live with little support and supervision from their parents in an environment were such antics are acceptable. Someone that grows under this kind of conditions doesn't need a film to behave that way.

Larry Clark definitely glorified NYC skater culture in KIDS. I remember when that movie came out, it was the adults who focused on all the drugs and sex. Teenagers were more drawn to the culture and the characters. It was the first time a lot of people had seen NYC skate culture.

Writing a story about a sub-group =/= glorifying. Just because SOME teens got the wrong message despite the mess the characters got in at the end of the film, doesn't mean Kids was intended to promote bad behavior.

At least Kids really made you think of a serious thing like HIV/AIDS. This movie had no point at all, really. I don't know. For me it was all thrown around, didn't seem to have a solid story to it and was basically just a movie for guys to see nude girls. I cannot believe the known actors in this movie even accepted those parts. Made them look pretty bad. It didn't show any great acting.

Yeah, if it weren't for "Kids" it never would have occurred that deflowering two virgins in one day, beating a black guy nearly to death with a skateboard and all my skinny skate-rat friends, going to a wild party where everyone passes and NOBODY calls the cops or gets in trouble with their parents, and then waking up in the morning to date-rape an unconscious girl MIGHT be spreading HIV/AIDS around. I don't see how you can "learn" anything from a bunch of laughably ridiculous bullsh^t like "Kids".

The big difference between these two movies is "Kids" was directed by Larry Clark who took the whole thing completely seriously (perhaps because he was too busy setting up pervy crotch-shots of adolescent girls and boys). This over-the-top stuff actually works a lot better as SATIRE. It also works better with this kind of arty, stylized filmmaking Harmony Korrine uses . This movie isn't great, but it is VAST improvement over "Kids". If Korrine improves this much in the next twenty years, I think he'll actually be great filmmaker.
