Upon first viewing I hated it, too, but now I love it.
When I first saw this film, I was extremely disappointed. It was clearly a beautifully shot, visually stunning film, but the music video-esque editing style (all of the inserts of shots from different scenes put into each scene and all of the looping, repetition, and such) really took me out of the film.
I was expecting a much more conventionally structured film that ran smoothly and consistently, so I just couldn't invest myself into it. What was shot was truly great but I just wished that it would have been edited with a more conventional structure, which would have made the film a lot more engaging and appealing.
But I realized that a lot of images, moments, and phrases from the film stuck with me long after the film. So I decided to watch it again, aware of its unconventional structure/style and I liked it a lot more. Then I watched it again. And again. And I completely love it now.
I definitely understand that this movie isn't everybody's taste, as it is very artsy and unconventional (and most of the time, unconventional movies are sadly bashed by mainstream moviegoers), but it truly is a spectacularly beautiful, haunting, and thought-provoking dream-like experience that is dazzling to look at and is filled with an often-overlooked social commentary on the youth of this generation.
And dat Britney Spears "Everytime" montage tho.
