Should be called 'Terrence Malick Learns Absolutely Nothing'

After his last couple of films were dismissed as glorified perfume commercials, Malick goes right back out with the same ol' bag of tricks hoping for a different result. Meaning, the man does not take critique well. So, here we are with a another movie featuring randomly filmed vignettes that are supposed to somehow come together to form a narrative, with Malick wondering why he's staring down 29 percent on the Tomato meter. Followed by the usual peanut gallery defending his "genius".

The Tree of Life was very critically acclaimed, and was even a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars - so it's not his last couple of films.

Tree of Life is very polarizing though amongst the people who have seen it. That's the thing, he seems to have gotten in a rut of wanting to repeat the formula of that film, when really, it should have been a one off for that approach.

Malick isn't a computer savvy guy, so maybe he's just tuning out opinion of his films altogether online or otherwise. I thought he would start steering his current crop of films toward actually making a statement this time instead of bombarding the audience with manic imagery.

Very well put, malick doesn't make good films and he's afraid of the reality that there are alot of people who don't like his films as opposed to the ones who for some non logical reason praise this man as a genius .His enormous fragile ego can't take that ,if your going to make films and .Put them out for all too see than you have to be willing to except the criticism just as much as you do the praise .His films should be peddled for little to no money .He should be ashamed of himself peddling his *beep* films to people who work for their dollar . If there are some people who want over pay for his films to watch them that's fine .Send his films straight to dvd or put them in indie cinemas to where they will be seen by people who praise this man and his work.

Humankind cannot bear very much reality

Dear kidjay,

LOL How dare those studio execs and actors choose to work with him. Obviously Malick is so egotistical for staying out of the spotlight and not talking about his films it's all so clear now! And of course you can judge people based on the fact that they like this or that film how brilliant an observation. They look so ridiculous liking something you don't like!
Clearly Hollywood needs you to decide who gets to keep making films, then we'll have another glorious golden age for movies. No one will ever have to battle over what's good or bad because there will never be a bad movie ever again. And arguments on the Internet will be a long-distant memory.

Thanks for the laughs.

Sincerely, mdek

If you can't take his style of film making then maybe its not for you? Have you ever considered that 'genius'?!? So let me guess, you're gonna watch Knight of Cups too and come here and bitch about it???

Sigh, Malick has always been the same, some of films are straightforward, some aren't, but the core underlying philosophical approach has always been always there. Take it or leave it.

I rarely post on the forums but i had to say something to this. Malick is in the category of another kind of filmmakers, for the ones who bash his films because they don't have a narrative, you're just not used to this kind of cinema, you're expecting a story to follow and are let down because it never comes. Directors like Sharunas Bartas, Wong Kar Wai, Apichatpong Weerasethkul, Ben Rivers have all abandoned a conventional narrative. I'm of the opinion that a narrative hinders the cinema's full expression, it's capable of so much more than just tell a story. It can express emotions, the state of mind of a person much better than any of the other arts. If you really want a plot to follow, well read a good novel.

Also strong images are never meaningless, never. There's no such thing as beautiful cienematography and an awful film. That only means that the imagery is for show without any heart of the director put into it. It can be technicaly "pretty" but also completely empty.

I strongly encourage everyone to give them another try, to just look at them in a different way, look at them as an experience, maybe you'll find out that you actually like them. If not, then maybe they're just not for you.

You Parred him off very well! Really put this loser into his place! Good Job! - certainly better than his last 3 films which were sloppy, filthy shaky-cammed pieces of garbage
