Gorgeous but inert
In the hands of director Terrence Malick and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, the world is lush and beautiful, filled with moments that seem to stretch out towards infinity; moments that can reach in between beams of sunset and walk between the raindrops. It’s a gorgeous universe, where a spiral scratched effortlessly into a sandy beach contains the multitudes of the galaxy. There will never be an ugly day in this universe, no matter the body count.
All the beauty goes a long way towards making Malick’s latest, Knight of Cups, yet another addition to the director’s ever-growing portfolio of beauty-drenched spectacles. With cinematographer Lubezki by his side, Malick treks across the landscape of modern Los Angeles, the camera moving almost like a spectre — floating in and out of conversations weightlessly before going out over rocky cliffs towards the shimmering Pacific. God almighty, it’s all so pretty! So why, then, is the film so inert: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/knight-of-cups/
