This show uses actors! I've seen the casting calls...so bummed!

I KNOW that some of the "public" in this show are actually actors. I know this because I have seen casting calls for actors. Casting calls for "nun," "sloppy eater," "motorcycle guy," etc. You can google "Impractical Jokers casting calls" to see some for yourself.

I absolutely love this show and the guys seem like genuine guys, so what's up with these casting calls? I also have seen on at least two occasions the same person in the audience of a focus group.

I can understand the need for filling seats with some extras just to be sure the crew gets the right reaction shots, and I could see it being very difficult to film a show like this with as many episodes a season as this show has without faking it at least somewhat.

Thoughts?

This has been discussed many times before. I believe it is just for reaction shots. Cameras need to catch "audience members" with over the top reactions during stunts, only way to guarantee that is by hiring people.

But it could very well be that the show is staged, just like 98% of what's on television. Never believe what you see on TV.

reply

Oh, I'm sure it has been discussed before, but imdb removes old threads.

Just googled and the first one I saw was for a disgruntled friend. I assume that is the person who throws water over them in annoyance for something. They have also hired a couple of kids to be their son and for eg when joe did his sumo wrestling punishment they hired the audience, when joe did his femail one they hired other models, when murr interviewed Danika they hired body builders etc. There will be casting calls for lots of things and lots of reasons, doesn't make the show fake. These people were never thought of to be real. The woman who proposed to q for his no punishment was hired-someone messaged q and said how mean that punishment was as they thought she was his real girlfriend.

this link just takes me to google. what am i googling?

Everyone knows that they have casting calls, and it's extremely obvious when someone they hired onscreen. "Sloppy eater", you say? Sloppy Joe. There have been tons of instances where they have help from a hired hand to make a challenge even funnier. They are never the people being pranked, that's all authentic.

reply

Exactly!

reply

Thank you. This has been asked and answered so many times.

A thread like this keeps popping up every couple of months, I guess from new people who started watching the show or posting on the forums.

Do some people still believe the reactions are all genuine? Of course it's all controlled, these people are too famous now to be out in public and not have every shot ruined. Biggest positive about this show compared to the crap TruTV pushes is this doesn't go out of control with the stupid and they don't push the "it's real! look, people! real people!"

There are a lot of people who don't know about Impractical Jokers.

reply

No one said everyone knows who they are. Take your medication and try again.

See, that is how they can still get genuine reactions.

reply

You take your medication and try again. There is ton of footage they don't show. They don't want to show reactions like "oh wait you are from that tv show..." because it would get boring fast and it will look like a cheap ass commercial/show off inside the show which would be stupid. They want to show the genuine reactions. Also the episodes are 20 minutes each so they rush a lot of the time skipping some challenges for some of the jokers without explaining why. (I know this watching at the bonus footage in Season 3 Episode 5 for example) Some jokers even do their tasks on two people successfully yet they do the same task on a third guy and fail although usually they always do only 2 successful tries to pass the challenge and there is no explanation on that too.

Why do you think they show everything as it happens and not skip the recognition scenes which get ruined???

I just saw the same lady being pranked on 2 diff episodes. Both on youtube.

I think the guy that did the Q punishment where they were reading lines from when Q was proposing was in a second episode somewhere as well.

reply

usually when threads say this i check since I have all episodes, always it is wrong...but you are correct here, that IS the same girl...hmmmm

when murray gives her a reading in the mall, and slingshot burger, both with murr...same girl

reply

That's not the same person.

reply

I would say for the people throwing water, the people in the Old West town where Q was punished just recently. I can't think of any more right off the top of my head, but you know there are instances where they need extras.

The person who came in and threw water on the guys when they were working behind the counter in the convenience stores, the kids who were in on the fact that Q was going to kick down their sandcastle, the actors in the food court who the Jokers were supposed to find, the models for Q in his fashion show punishment, the models lined up in front of Joe when they dressed him in drag and made him think he was attending a runway show and not a presentation on computers.

reply

Here's another example: The punishment where Q got hit in the shin by the little girl with the plastic baseball bat every time he missed a basket. There was a whole crowd there to watch it. Those were all "extras", and they were all in on it.

There are plenty of uses for actors on the show without spoiling the "reality".

When Sal had to play the swamp monster, there was a boat full of people watching. I always thought they were probably in on it, they were laughing a lot. There's no reason why they had to be a random boat full of people thinking they were on a legitimate tour and were really seeing a swamp monster.

While we're talking bringing in actors....

Who was the woman playing the inspector in last week's punishment of Sal? She looked familiar and dare I say, "Cougar-ish?"

Brilliant punishment BTW.

reply

I was just going to mention her too, as well as the feds who came to shut down filming were all actors too.

What episode are you guys referring to?

reply

Sometimes people are used again. For example, I read, some of the people who felt sorry for Murr in the Human Pinata episode and Sal in the Garbage Barge episode, are the same people who cheer when Joe gets punished in Dog Days of Bummer. Additionally, some who felt sorry for Murr in Look Out Below also cheered when Joe was punished in No Escape and Sal in Field of Screams. You would think this would also qualify for what Joe did to Murr in Strip High Five, despite both were punished, though it seems nearly everyone was laughing and cheering at Murr mostly, but it is quite possible they did feel sorry for him as well, I am sure at least some did, but as embarrassed as Murr was, you can easily tell that Murr is smiling and chuckling at times, and you can assume that perhaps several thought it was merely a harmless prank and all four were in on it. He does seem less traumatized in that episode, perhaps it is just me though. I am quite sure all those bystanders eventually caught on and thought it was merely all in good fun. I am also quite positive they did not merely laugh and cheer to make Murr feel bad or to traumatize him, they feel bad on their own, but I was puzzled why some took pictures and footage.
