Another Emotion?

Do you think there was space in the story for another emotion?
If yes what do think it could have been?

reply

They should of had Surprise. Surprise is the last major emotion and it can also cover things like wonder, shock, amazement, etc.

reply

is panic an emotion

reply

Surprise was planned. It was scrapped for being too similar to Fear (which I'd think shock would fall under). And personally I'd assign wonder and amazement to Joy.

I thought about this and Jealousy sprang to mind. It's a primary emotion I think, like the others. I think Jealousy would have to be a protagonist though, like Joy, at least when first introduced.

I think they did a really good job with the emotions they chose. Every other emotion I can think of could be some combination of the 5 they chose, like forming any possible color by combining a small number of primary colors, which is what you started seeing at the end of the movie as Riley matured and her emotions became more complex. The way they associated emotions with specific colors also parallels this concept.

Jealousy is basically a byproduct of fear ("OMG, someone could steal my precious one!"). Or, if you mean jealousy as envy, it's still out of fear ("Damn it, he's better than me, he will be the cool one!"). In both case, jealousy comes from the fear of losing something dear to us.

In turn, out of fear may come anger or disgust (as in strong judgment).
So we still are within the basic five emotions.

I disagree. Fear and jealousy may be felt together in some situations but I think fear is distinct from jealousy. Jealousy is also wanting something that spmeone else has and I don't see how that's related to fear.

reply

Jealousy cannot exist without fear. In fact, jealousy is a kind of fear.

Jealousy is also wanting something that spmeone else has

I already considered that emotion, when mentioning envy.
Envy is fear of someone being better than us (with all the negative consequences for us), and/or the pain about someone being happier than us (we see that as unfair, and it's painful).

Actually, most negative emotions are expressions of different fears or pain.

It occurred to me the other day that Shame is also a primary emotion. If we get an Inside Out 2, Shame could be centre stage during puberty :-P I think shame is something that is intrinsic and very basic. Not sure about guilt. I think that is more of a group defined thing. Don't know though. The way I think about these things is to imagine that there is only one person in existence. Would they feel shame? Guilt? Sanity is definitely a group construct, there is no reasonable way to define normal in the case of a unique lifeform, except maybe very generally in terms of viability.

Wasn't one emotion originaly an antagonist or am I remembering it wrong?
