But if you have played the games, we have literally learned nothing new through this video. I could play any one of the games, read the comics, or books, and know this.

But people that haven't played the games don't know this information. The studio likely figures that most fans of the game are likely to go see the film at least once. Who they need to appeal and try to market this film to are the people that AREN'T familiar with the games, who don't know about the history of Assassins vs. Templars. Whether the general audience can be pulled into this world is going to be a big factor on how well the movie does or doesn't do. So yes, a lot of the marketing material is probably going to feel like "well duh!" information to the game fans because it's not the game fans that they're trying to reach.

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.
Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.
Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

If a featurette is how they think they will reach the general audience, then God help the success of this movie, because I can assure you that the general audience isn't going to give a rats ass about a featurette, and nether do I. Did you think the general audience cared for it with Hitman: Agent 47 and Warcraft? No, of course not, their box office numbers speak for themselves. Instead of giving us these stupid featurette's, they need to focus on giving the general audience a good trailer that will actually leave a lasting, good impression, for crying out loud.

While the trailers were not the best for the people who cares about quality of the movie and how it's being represented, they did all they could to attract attention of as much people as possible. You can argue that pop-songs and specific editing are not fitting this type of film, but they were appealing to the mass audience who, for example, voting for Kanye West's song so it gets its way to the music charts. So don't try to confuse the people by stating that trailers were not appealing to the masses, because they were.
