This could be the next Fellowship of the Ring

What I mean by that is based on research that i've done in regards to the production for both Assassin's Creed and Lord of the Rings there are some similarities that bear mentioning. Viggo Mortensen confirmed in an interview in 2014 that the production of Lord of the Rings was very messy, that Peter Jackson had spent a lot of money and that they were in a lot of trouble, even going as far as to say that the studio would never have allowed the expensive much needed reshoots for the second and third films and would have been straight to DVD had the first one not been so successful, It also wasn't till the first 20 minutes was shown at Cannes that there was any sort of confidence in it by the studio, and it was in fact a December release...

Now I don't know what the production for Assassin's Creed has been like for the cast and crew, but it seems as though the studio was a bit apprehensive about the film and reports say that the film is either 180 - 200 million dollars in budget which is A LOT, which is why they decided to screen the first 20 minutes to select press groups, and what followed were articles that were actually highly optimistic about what they saw. They also did do a first test screening as confirmed by writer Bill Collage, and now we've gotten another trailer, new posters, a TV Spot, and more behind the scenes looks at the film. I'm going to assume that fox now has a bit more confidence in the project and this is why I think it could indeed be a case like Fellowship of the Ring.

Because Fellowship of the Ring even with the problems they faced during production and admittedly not fantastic trailers, still released with massive critical acclaim and dominated the box office and in a time when the internet is not as prevalent as it is now. Assassin's Creed could turn out to be a similar case where there's a level of uncertainty about the project from the studio, the cast and crew are all passionate about it, and in the end it turns out to be a fantastic movie with the added benefit of brand recognition, the internet, and academy award recognised actors to boost its box office return. Oh and the fact that Assassin's Creed is also a December release. This is just a thought though, Assassin's Creed could turn to be a critical and financial flop absolutely, but let me leave you with this. Every big movie has the same chance to fail or succeed. Suicide Squad even with it's massive amount of marketing ended up being a critical dud and didn't make the money the studio was expecting. Assassin's Creed I still think is a case of waiting and seeing what happens, it could go either way, I'm hoping that it goes the right way.

Suicide Squad did just fine at the box office, it was BvS that way under performed. The entertainment media is just saying that SS underperformed because they didn't like the film. The 185mil budgeted Star Trek Beyond did less than Tarzan worldwide and yet they are reluctant to call it a failure at the box office because they liked it and yet lable Tarzan a flop. BvS is utter garbage and SS is only slightly above average because of the actors performances. WB has had a horrible time quality wise when it comes to their comic book movies and should be criticized but the idea that BvS and SS flopped is a bold faced lie.

I see absolutely no scenario where Assassins Creed gets rave reviews, makes over 900mil and gets an Oscar nomination for best picture. It's a videogame movie, it will be lucky to get 55% on RT. As for the box office, good luck hitting 900+mil under Star Wars and to a far lesser extent Passengers. In the unlikely event that Assassins Creed is another Lord of the Rings I will be back on here to give you credit for a highly unlikely prediction coming true.

You're ver optimistic if you believe that it'll get the same kind of reception as Fellowship of the Ring. Maybe it'll be the first to finally break the video game movie curse but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

reply

I'd rather be optimistic, than go into it having a worried mentality. I'm not getting ahead of myself because again it's just a thought. Who knows maybe the movie is *beep* it could be the worst movie of the year for all I know, I'm just simply trying to bring a more optimistic view to all of this because I do understand the trepidation about the movie I really do.

reply

The trepidation is understandable, though I can't perceive of anything going wrong at this point or see any evidence that something has gone wrong. We can only wait and see how it turns out and we can't know until a month from now.

reply

You're really grasping at straws.

You should have never compared this video game adaptation to the brilliant LOTR trilogy. Shame on you.

reply

I'm not comparing it to LOTR. What a stupid thing to say, the movie isn't out yet so how can I compare it to LOTR? I haven't seen the movie yet. If you actually read what I said you would know that I said both movies in regards to behind the scenes stuff have some similarities. I was posing a potential optimistic scenario for the movie because there's a lot negativity going around. Being worried about the movie won't help. Shame on you.

reply

Making a thread with the title: "This could be the next Fellowship of the ring" is beyond stupid. The fact that there might be some similarities in regards to the behind the scenes stuff doesn't mean that it could be the next Fellowship of the ring. It has absolutely nothing in common with LOTR.

There's a lot of negativity going around with good reason. The failure of this movie is almost a guarantee at this point. Which is a real shame, but the studio brought it upon themselfs with their lack of a marketing campaign and their refusal to change the release date. It's like they want this movie to fail and couldn't care less about it.

You're actually not alone in this sentiment, I read an in-depth article exploring how Assassin's Creed can be Fox's answer to WB's LotR. Fassbender himself has described the films (including the already-planned two sequels) fantasy films, which obviously directly appeals to LotR fans. But AC also has a strong sci-fi element as well (with the present-day story), thus also giving appeal to the general sci-fi audience as well.

I really do hope this movie does great. No matter what, they're going to make the Han Solo film so there really wouldn't be any consequences if Rogue One doesn't do as well as expected. But Assassin's Creed us to Ubisoft as the first Iron Man was to Marvel Studios- an entire cinematic universe (or, in Ubi's case, TWO universes) hinge upon the success of this movie. Granted, I know enough about it to know without a doubt that this movie IS LotR-level good content wise. Let's just hope the box office reflects that. :)

reply

I'm with you 100%, do you think you could link me that article?

reply

I found and read it a while ago (like, at least a few months ago) so it may take me a while to find it. It was a really great read in general, so I will definitely do my best to find it again and link you to it!!

reply

I dont' believe Ubisoft's movie business depends on the success of this film. They have actually said so themselves. They realise it's a tricky thing they're trying to pull off (considering how bad video game adaptations have been doing) so they don't even expect it to make a lot of money. What they are focussing on instead is delivering a quality product that will create a positive vibe around the AC universe also for non gamers, generating a lot of profit in the long run.

reply

Oh I completely agree, and I'm glad to see Ubisoft so committed to their films. I just hope Fox continues to support New Regency and Ubisoft in the two sequels regardless of how well the first film does.

reply

Well it will not be the next fellowship of the ring. But it?s gonna be a great movie. There is only a very very very small chance that this movie is gonna fail.

reply

You lot are all worry warts. If the movie turned up great, well then enjoy. If the movie turned out to be a turd, well then, move on and say next please.

No point in worrying with all the negativities since it won't affect none of us physically or financially. Who cares what buffoons or others and critics say, if you yourself find the movie enjoyable well then, good for you. If not, oh well, it's no skin off my/your nose.

As for this being maybe the next LOTR, only time will tell.

I'd just like to say that as an older lady I know nothing about video games but I've seen the trailer for this a couple of times in the last couple of weeks while we've been at our local Vue and am really looking forward to seeing the film. My friend and I try to go most weeks and watch a varied array of films but we are partial to a good action film so we'll be there over Christmas and New Year avoiding the dross on the telly ! I don't see why we can't fit in Assassin's Creed, Passengers and Rogue One over the festive season.
