At least Ubisoft admits that this movie could flop
But why make a movie when you know you will lose money?

But why make a movie when you know you will lose money?
My box office prediction: 300-360 million.
shareWhere are you even taking such words from? Ubisoft said that this movie isn't about making money. When exactly did it become a synonymous with 'will flop'?

I wonder why Justin Kurzel was hired to do this project. Are they going a ''Duncan Jones'' Warcraft route? Justin's last movie Macbeth, was critical acclaimed, but flopped in the box office. I think the studio is making a mistake hiring directors that doesn't have the experience of doing big blockbusters.
shareKurzel was hired because he's an ambitious filmmaker and his participation was lobbied by Fassbender. And I don't get what it has to do with Duncan Jones. Macbeth did flop in box-office, but did you really expect Shakespeare's movie adaptation to gross much money?

All we've gotten is a stupid Kanye West music video.

No no, they're looking at the bigger picture. They believe the movie will be big enough critically so as to attract attention to the entire franchise from those who have never played the games or even those who may have stopped playing them. When this happens, the point is that Ubi will make their money back through future game sales, especially if the movie helps attract new and old fans to the games. If that makes sense.
Fox and New Regency are the companies who actually stand to benefit the most if the movie does well commercially- Ubi made a deal that they can keep most of the money from the movie since Ubi will more than make up for it through the games. So Ubi doesn't at all think the film will flop- Corre's exact wording was regarding the fact that Ubi itself won't be making much money from the movie, not that the movie as a whole won't make money.
Hope that helps clear up the confusion! :)
100% correct, thank you for saying this :) sadly lots of people will falsely misinterpret the statement as "we think this movie sucks and we're not going to make money from it." I'm actually willing to bet money that the movie will receive great reviews and even be nominated for Oscars, #Assassin'sCreed2016ForBestPicture, but we'll see what happens. Also do you think we'll get a second trailer this September?
shareAre you having a laugh, or are you being serious? Nominated for Oscars? You've got to be joking?
I hope this movie does well and receive great reviews because there are still a lot of people who actually care about reviews. I want this movie to succeed, but to bet money on the fact that it will receive Oscar nominations is beyond ridiculous.
How can you 'falsely' interpret something? You can wrongly interpret something, but you make it sound like some people deliberately interpreted the statement as if Ubisoft thought the movie was going to fail. Ubisoft's statement was foolish. There was a lot of backtracking regarding the statement to clarify the meaning of said statement. He made it sound like ubisoft thought the movie would flop, while he actually meant that they would make money in a different way (by selling more games). However, his statement was very vague and it needed clarification. Which ubisoft did in a later statement.
You do realize that it's ok for people to question ubisoft?
The actual statement isn't that vague when you consider the logistics behind their deal. Even then it's a statement of prioritizing quality before returns. Some people are really jumping the gun in thinking that Ubisoft has no confidence in the movie.
This movie can be nominated in several areas really, from the cinematography, Jed Kurzel's music, acting (Fassbender playing two characters), and costume design.
Not vague? How was anyone supposed to know the logistics behind their deal? Did the statement specify the logistics of said deal? No, it didn't The statement was foolish and vague. Why else all the backtracking by ubisoft?
Some of you guys really make me laugh. The movie is going to be nominated for best picture. Kurzel for best director. Fasssbender for best actor. Irons for best supporting actor. This movie is going to win every Oscar!! It's unbeatable!
"We are not going to earn a lot of money from it," he said. "It is a lot more a marketing thing. It's also good for the image of the brand."
"Although we will make some money, it's not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin's Creed to more people," he added.
"We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin's Creed games."
How is that a foolish statement?
I don't know what your perception of this property turning to cinema is, but there's no denying it's one of the more gorgeous looking films that also has academy award winning actors and an acclaimed director attached to it. Look at Mad Max last year and how successful it was at the Academy. Now, Assassin's Creed has an even richer story.
It's a foolish statement because a lot of people interpreted it as if ubisoft was expecting the movie to fail.
There's no denying that there has never been a succesfull and critically acclaimed video game adaptation. Maybe this will be the first, but it could be nothing more than another failed video game adaptation.
The movie looks fine, but to claim it is one of the most gorgeous looking films is premature. The movie does have great actors, but that isn't a quarantee that the movie will be great. There have been a lot of bad movies with stellar casts.
Kurzel is hardly an acclaimed director. Macbeth was ok, but nothing special. I've never even heard of any of the other things he directed.
Mad Max fury road was Amazing! I'd never experienced anything like that before. It was non stop action. One of the best movies I've seen in the last decade. It deserved every Oscar it won and more. George Miller should have won an oscar for best director. Kurzel wishes he was half as talented as George Miller. George Miller is a legend!
That still doesn't answer how it's foolish.
You know what, we need to stop looking at these as video game movies but actual films. How many bad movies has Fassbender had? Almost none. And this is a project he developed and spearheaded from the ground up. There's a specific approach they're taking that won't saddle them either.
It IS one of the more gorgeous looking films of this year with every frame looking like a Caravaggio painting. That's nothing foreign from one of the greatest DP's, if not the greatest, in the industry right now, Adam Arkapaw. Kurzel is acclaimed in his work so far from The Turning, Blue Tongue, Snowtown, and Macbeth. He knows how to craft a heart wrenching story through characters and especially through a theme of violence that drives characters instead of being for show. Mad Max is certainly an exciting movie, but it doesn't have that much thought-provoking substance like Assassin's Creed can achieve.
I've already explained why the statement was foolish. I'm not going to keep repeating myself.
Like it or not this movie is a video game adaptation and that is how people will look at it. Maybe that's a good thing. There are low expectations for video game adaptations. This could be the first succesfull one. We will know in a few months.
It's not foolish, most people just look at the stupid clickbait headlines.
That's how people familiar with it being a property will look at it. Critics and film lovers will look at it as a film.
It had nothing to do with the headlines. The statement itself was foolish. If it wasn't foolish and vague then why did ubisoft release another statement to clarify it?
Wrong. Everyone will look at it as a video game adaptation, especially critics.
It's Obvious that we disagree and that's fine. There is no point in continuing this discussion. This is the last post I will make about this subject.
You haven't explained why it's foolish. And they released another statement to clarify what they meant when their words were being twisted by clickbait.
Nope, critics will look at it as how it functions as a film. That's what they do with films.
Hahaha!!! Keep telling yourself that the statement wasn't foolish. Keep telling yourself that people wont look at it as a video game adaptaion.
We obviously disagree, but somehow you can't accept that I have a different opinion. You can't stand that I disagree with you.
I'm done with this pointless discussion.
The. why do keep commenting with an empty defense? They're looking at it as a film, plain and simple.
shareIt's not my problem that you are incapable of reading my comments properly. I've told you multiple times why the statement was foolish, but all you keep saying is that the statement is not foolish and that it's because of the headlines. It's ridiculous!
AC is a video game adaptation. That's a fact. Why would the critics ignore the fact that it's a video game adaptation?? It doesn't make any sense! Why this upsets you is beyond me. This could work in their favor. This could be the first great video game adaptation. You're acting like that's a bad thing.
I don't agree with you about the statement and I don't agree about the critics!! Get over it! Your stubbornness is insufferable! I'm starting to think that you're just a troll who likes to annoy people.
I don't think you're in any position to be calling people stubborn, because you seem to be the one who's getting upset when someone expresses a differing viewpoint to yours... For the record I know you are an AC fan, so am I, and I understand that not everything about the movie or it's promotion so far is all smooth sailing, but it seems as though you are quick to shut down people who are more excited for the film than you are and act like a lot of what you're saying is fact and then say "it's ok if you disagree" it's the equivalent of you saying "I'm right, but it's ok if you disagree" like jesus dude! Like if you don't believe the film will be nominated for Oscars that's fine, no need to act like what i'm saying is ridiculous when a New York Times article had the movie down as a potential Oscars film.
AC isn't technically a video game adaptation as it is not based on any pre-existing Assassin's Creed story, it's a brand new story set in the same universe. You're right in that a lot of people may view it that way, and obviously critics will know that it's based on a video game property. But he's right that critics will look at it as a film and will judge it as such, it's why they're called FILM critics, and it's why previous video game adaptations have failed, because they don't work as films.
You obviously think the way you do about the statement and the critics, that's perfectly fine, and I understand how you feel, so rather than get upset just have a discussion, instead of getting mad at people and saying they're wrong for bringing up relevant questions or facts.
act like a lot of what you're saying is fact and then say "it's ok if you disagree" it's the equivalent of you saying "I'm right, but it's ok if you disagree" like jesus dude! You obviously think the way you do about the statement and the critics, that's perfectly fine
You're really coming across both pretentious and impolite in this discussion.
shareAnother hypocrite. You've got some nerve calling someone else pretentious and impolite. Take a good look in the mirror because you just described yourself.
What discussion are you referring to? You mean the one where everything you think is right and anyone who disagrees with you is wrong? Get over yourself.
I've had enough of your hypocritical nonsense.

You're sounding stubborn and pretentious. I'm just trying to have a civil discussion. What I said doesn't reveal anything about me being a hypocrite.
You live in a delusional fantasy world! Having a civil conversation? Are you joking? Calling someone a liar multiple times is civil?
The actual statement isn't that vague ... Some people are really jumping the gun in thinking that Ubisoft has no confidence in the movie. This movie can be nominated in several areas

My statements were calm, consistent, and composed. That's not evidence of me being a hypocrite. You went to inflammatory and condescend comments quite rapidly
shareYou're hilarious! Calm, consistent and composed? You mean stubborn, hypocritcal and pretentious.

Well I believe it was the New York Times (or some such newspaper) that was giving it Oscar buzz in a section predicting next year's Oscar winners. It was in an issue that ran right after this year's Oscars happened
shareThanks for the kind words! Yes, I think (and hope!) that we will get another trailer this month. So excite!!
shareProblem is this movies looks like another huge budget Video Game Movie that will simply not sell to the General Audience....and if you are spening 200 Million dollars on a movie you really need to get in the non fans to stand a chance of breaking even, let alone make a profit.
IMHO,you might have a problem with the Game Companies not really getting this, and thinking that selling the film to the non gaming audience is unimportant. Ubisoft and Blizzard might be great at selling to the gamers, but might very well have a big problem in selling the G.A. They should leave that to the film studios.
I doubt that game companies think that selling the film to a general audience is not important because the reason why they want to make movies of their franchises is basically to bring the franchise to people not familiar with the game. Big budget video game movies still have the possibility of working if someone can make one that's critically received (which by the way, actually requires the participation of the game companies in order succeed because the movie studios and directors do not know how to do it as proven by the lack of any that have good critical reception so far).
shareYou replied to the wrong person. I didn't compare Kurzel to Miller, nor did I claim that this movie would win any Oscars. Two different people made those statements. You should properly read the comments and reply to the correct people.

Mind your own damn business! Why are you even replying to this three month old post? I haven't been on this board for over a month!!! What are you even talking about? I'm not bullying anyone. Keep your delusions to yourself and shut the hell up.
