I don't understand the plot

So he's a prisoner who's an ancestor of an assassin and travels back in time in his ancestors body to kill someone or people?

reply

He's a prisoner who's descended from an Assassin, the prisoner is rescued by a International Corporation, who then uses a machine to relieve his ancestors memories, kinda like a playback.

It's much, MUCH, complicated than that though.

The biggest problem with society is that it refuses to believe that different opinions do exist.

And thats the best you have to offer? Just play the game. Why not tell that to everyone else asking the same question about the point of this film? Its not a good sign that after two trailers and TV spots people are still saying: "so um, what is this supposed to be about again?"

reply

It's a film about genetic memory and travelling back in time through virtual reality machine. The main problem it rises is the question: why the man is prone to violence - because it's something in our genetic code, or because of out own mind's imperfection?

That's all everyone who is unfamiliar with a game should know, and this is really enough. Everything else - in theaters next month.

They (Marion Cotillard's character mainly) actually tell you what the movie is about. The guy's death is faked so they can put him in a machine to get information from his ancestor centuries back. They go into even more detail in the second trailer.

thanks, it still doesn't make much sense.

   Thats because the way the story was told in the trailers was half-assed compared to the plot synopsis kevivor11 gave you from the games. The least they could have touched upon in the trailer was the actual basic objective of going back in time, which is to gather the artifacts "holding great power". Thats the least the incompetent jackasses at Fox could have done. You would think Ubi Soft could have knocked some sense into the marketers in charge after the disaster that was the first trailer, but that was really too much to expect because they don't even have their sh!t together either looking at the absolute bastardization that has occurred with the Tom Clancy brands. Why should I expect any better from them with cinema?

reply

So you expected them to spoil the entire plot in the trailers? Did you? Because it's the only way to tell something beyond "the actual basic objective of going back in time".

No it is not the only way to give a run down of the plot without spoiling it. If the buffoons at Fox had a shred of creativity within them, if they actually gave a sh!t about the product and put in a real effort, they would figure it out like they do with every other movie with a wacky fantasy/science fiction story. If the plot is as complex and deep as you claim it is, then even I could have done a better job than Fox with the trailers, starting with removing that god awful music.

SPEED didn't make any sense either but it was a huge blockbuster.

Speed is not a fantasy action thriller based off of a video game. Even the Speed trailers was better than Assassins Creeds Trailers.

reply

NO, they weren't!

OK, troll effort 2/10. Points for showing up to try, at least...

So he's a prisoner who's an ancestor of an assassin and travels back in time in his ancestors body to kill someone or people?

Let's break it down.

"So he's a prisoner"
Yes

"who's an ancestor of an assassin"
Descendant of an assassin, yes.

"and travels back in time in his ancestors body"
No, he uses a machine that allows him to relive his ancestor's memories, sort of like virtual reality.

He interacts with these memories actively, though: he actually feels like he has full control of his ancestor's body, and the program allows for him to deviate from the exact actions his ancestor took, as long as he "synchronizes" with the important memories. So to him, it feels like he is time traveling.

However, he is not actually time traveling (just reliving memories), and no changes he makes will affect the timeline.

"to kill someone or people"
No, the reason people use this machine is to discover important information their ancestor learned that may be useful to them. For example, in many of the games they are trying to find a lost historical artifact that the ancestor encountered. They then use this knowledge in the present day to try and locate the object.

Generally, to unlock this big memory the Animus user must synchronize with the memories of the events leading up to the big memory. Since the ancestor was an assassin, many of the memories will likely involve assassinating people.
