The sequel will take place in America during the Cold War

Assassin's Creed: The sequel to the film might take place during the Cold War

For Assassin's Creed 2, Justin Kurzel would like to take a tour of Animus in the 1950s in America, a film noir set during the Cold War.

If Assassin's Creed (which comes out on December, 21 in France) is a success, there will be sequels: "we have planned a story on three films," confirmed Michael Fassbender, hero and producer (and uncredited screenwriter) to the Premier microphone. Adapted from Ubisoft's successful video game franchise, Assassin's Creed tells (roughly) the millennial and occult struggle between two secret societies, the Templars (forces of reaction) and the Assassins, the partisans of free will. The Templars use the Animus, a machine capable of plunging into the "genetic memory" of a person, to relive his memories and to discover the secret of the Assassins. Cal Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is a condemned to death who will relive the past of his ancestor Aguilar, Assassin in Spain of 1492. Each game of the franchise makes it possible to immerse himself in a different place and time: Jerusalem during Of the First Crusade, Paris during the French Revolution, London of the underworld in 1860 ...

We asked the director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth with Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the latter also in Assassin's Creed) what period would he explore in a possible Assassin's Creed 2 movie: Justin would like to tackle on the Cold War, as shown in our video. Fassbender, for his part, does not confirm, and prefers to say that "Justin talks too much", laughing.

Let's wait and see.

I like the idea of doing a trilogy, and it will be great to see finally a historical period based in the 20th century (I had expected the WW II instead). I guess the third film, would take place in another time period, but will follow one single timeline plot to keep unity to the entire trilogy, right?

reply

Right now, I'm more concerned over whether this one will be successful. Make a good self-contained story first, then we'll worry about sequels if it does well.

reply

Exactly, "IF" there is a sequel and the film is a success.

reply

But we don't know what success - critical, commercial, or "audiential".

Money obviously. It's all about money.

LOL I was about to write a lengthy response on how Ubisoft funneled money into this despite making a deal with Fox to get very little from the movie's box office, and how because it was co-financed by the incredibly (read: billions of dollars) successful game dev it will most likely get both sequels as long as it is critically received...

But you summed that all up in two gifs. To quote the British guards from the first AC game: "You win, I yield!!"

reply

Ok lol they will make another movie if the first one makes no money. Btw, where is the sequel for Allegiant? Or Warcraft? Pr Hitman?

reply

There's no way the first one not making any money. There's no movie in history which've made NO money. The question is, how much money it will make. Or you talk about the profit?

Hitman wasn't financed by the original game's developer, and Blizzard don't have enought money to finance the sequel to Warcraft without any profit from the first one. They didn't even financed the first one so much, obviously. The majority of money came from Legendary and Universal (that's why they had so much creative control over this). Ubisoft, on the opposite, is now a major player on the gaming field, it's like Warner Bros of 20th Century Fox or Disney of gaming industry. They make no less money than Hollywood studios on their biggest blockbusters. So they have money to spend on AC movies.

Ok time will tell if "there's no way the first is not making any money". I just don't want you to have your hopes crushed if this movie flops and doesn't get a sequel. Stop being so sure about its future when the background of videogame films is awful and promotion has been very few (it basically started a month before the release).

reply

Ubisoft already said that even if the movie Delivers almost no money, the sequel is almost a certainty

reply

It is good to have a dream

If the first movie makes no profit and they decide to go with a sequel anyway, then it should be made for Netflix or straight to DVD so as to not waste up space in theaters for a movie no one cared for in the first place, that can go to other movies that will actually make a profit. You see, its not rocket science, its really this simple. The game industry should go more of the Marvel and DC route and make their video game adaptations for Netflix and television.

reply

There are already plenty of people who care about this film. Marvel and DC's television expansion is big, but it's no match to their cinematic worlds.

To be honest i'd rather have another time period, i absolutely loved that they choose Spain, but right now i'm tired of war movies, i don't want AC to tackle anything during the 20th century, i'd rather have them going with Vikings than soldiers.

The biggest problem with society is that it refuses to believe that different opinions do exist.

In recent Facebook live chat, Justin Kurzel also said that more far you're going more interesting it becomes. But personally he choose to make a Cold War period for the next chapter. He just wants to go there. But it's still a subject to change, so don't accept it as a fact.
