Is because it is a new story with mostly new characters, rather than just make a movie about a video game. It may be very similar to AC1, but it isn't tied to very many things, so it has a lot of creative freedom.

Yup. Because they use a original story and main characters I have faith in this movie

I completely agree with you, as a die hard fan of the series, I really want great modern storytelling to come back. And also making it VERY similar to the first game will also help a lot of people understand the concept, which is a bit different and confusing for some. Lets just cross our fingers and toes that this will break the curse of bad video game movies.

It was not really that new, it was still based of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Hence the namesake.

I think it will be at least entertaining and fun if the plot doesn't become too convoluted, but the critics probably won't like it.
