Why Fassbender in both roles?

Why is Callum physically identical to his Spanish ancestor? Are we supposed to accept that the genetic lottery somehow made two "twins" separated by a couple of centuries? Or maybe the modern day Callum is a clone of Aguilar?

I hope the movie has a good explanation for this and not just some *beep* about Callum "visualizing" himself as Aguilar just so they can maximize Fassbenders screen time.

It was cheaper to hire one actor.

reply

It was probably thought to be less confusing for stupid audiences who couldn't understand that he was linked to his ancestor through the Animus. Just simpler, at least in the studio's mind, to just have the same actor portray both roles.

reply

Actually Callum and Aguilar looks quite different.

Nolan, I love you forever!

reply

Do you mean that their clothes and haircuts are different, and that one of them has a beard?

reply

Well, Aguilar is also more tanned, has tatou and some scars on his face, some and his facial expressions are more eager, and his face in general looks more older than Callum's, which can even be seen on the pictures from the film.

Nolan, I love you forever!

Altair, Ezio and desmond shared the same facial features. So why shouldn't that be the case by with Callum and Aguilar.

reply

Did they? I don't remember it that way!  But if so, everything's in order with the movie. 

reply

Here you can see that especially desmond and altair look very much alike

Ah, that's true! Well, that settles the argument then. 

Probably just so it's easier for the audience to connect to the character. Or, you could interpret it to mean that he imagines himself in the memory.

reply

^ This.
We have no definitive proof that the ancestor had the same features, it's just how he identifies with his " genetic memories"(i think this was the term in the games).

In universe answer is that it's an Animus feature to help with synchronization and lessen the stress on the user's mind of being a different person. That's why Altair and Desmond looked so much alike in ACI but Altair looked different in Revelations. You can also see it with Ezio a little bit you can definitely see some Desmond is Ezio's face. Out of universe answer the studio has to bank on Fassbender's star power.

The truth is the one major flaw the Animus has always had throughout all of the games is that the memories are all from a third-person perspective.

When you dream, you don't generally see yourself in third-person. What makes them so vivid, so real, is that you experience them first-person. And that's always been lacking in all of the games.

I get that they want you to see the character whose memories are being revealed and relived but they made no sense in the way that they were presented. We should be seeing out of the person's eyes, not over his shoulder.

reply

Yeah the 3rd person over the shoulder view for the Animus really doesn't make sense at all. From a game perspective I feel like Assassin's Creed needs to have that view but from a lore perspective they really never explained why it isn't in first person.

reply

I'm not going to go look up the quote, but the Ubisoft guy, Aymar, did mention that there is an explanation in the film for why they look identical.

reply

Or maybe because, as with the game, it's all a VR Matrix-y thing and he's just a player having two roles in the game?
