If anything, they should take what happened with the games in to consideration. AC2 was 10x better as the first as the developers listened to the critics.

It seems that some movies which only gross somewhat higher than twice their production budget end up getting sequels. According to Box Office Mojo, the first Tomb Raider movie had a reported production budget of $115 million and a gross of $274,703,340. This means that it grossed $44,703,340 more than twice the production budget. Pacific Rim, with a reported budget of $190 million and a China-boosted gross of $411,002,906, gained $31,002,906 more than 2x the production budget. Pacific Rim is getting a sequel and Tomb Raider had one.
