What was the deal with the photographer?

I noticed that the blonde photographer was featured prominently in a lot of scenes. Does anyone know what her significance was?

She took pictures.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

This was like a Whedon 'family' production. She was probably a friend.
Or an artifact, reminding us that this was a modern retelling.

She was there to show that the family was well known. Sort of like the paparazzi in today's world with celebrities. I did not really pick up on it either but as with any Joss Whedon thing, his audio commentaries are very educational. Only once did he go off on a tangent and tell a story, instead he stayed on point (as he usually does) and commented audibly on the movie I was watching. A nice change from other commentaries where you sometimes do not even thing they people know there is an episode being shown.
