If this movie was made in the late 80s or early 90s

... it would star Bill Murray as a loveable, but goofy, gas company excec*, on the lowest rung on the ladder, constantly being pestered by the O'Doole-brother in their pick-up truck throwing beer cans at him. And Brian Doyle-Murray would play the money-grubbing mayor with a mistress on the side. Anne Heche would play the school teacher, or Muriel Hemingway. Or Charlize Theron á la Trial and Error.
Daniel Stern would be the half-wit side kick.
Murray would be standing outside somewhere with his high tech cell phone the size of a brick - while town folks look on in wonder - and eventually he will loose reception and throw the cell phone in frustration on the road where it gets run over by a truck...
Eventually he starts to appreciate the town folks and their funny ways. And they, in turn, grow to love him.

And the movie would end with Murray learning a lesson for life while buying a house in the town and opening up an antique shop together with Heche/Hemingway/Theron.

Just saying...

* or maybe oil company, back then.

...they'd probably call it Local Hero and give it a Mark Knopfler soundtrack.
