good until the end
then it crashes and burns into a pile of self serving liberal environmental propaganda.

shareWhat did you expect coming from Matt Damon, a guy who probably does all his environmental research with Alec Baldwin over a latte at Spago's?
Methane gets tapped by wells all the time. It happened in George Washington's time, and it's always gonna happen when you poke holes in the ground. This film doesn't address that, of course. Doesn't talk about how such problems long predated fracking.
And I have yet to hear one environmentalist explain to me how chemicals injected into the shale that is ALWAYS thousands of yards BELOW the water table, can contaminated well water? I'd love to hear their scientific explanation on how that stuff climbs uphill against gravity and pressure.
I thought the overall theme ended up being to be wary/questioning of large corporations, and do not take them at face value. I thought fracking was used as the vessel.
Also, the fact that fracking has been done for centuries was addressed in the film.
Frances McDormand told the man she had been hanging around that she thought the vote would go their way and Matt Damon didn't tell the town's people how to vote. He said he didn't think that what happened in Louisiana would happen there but they should be aware of the risks before voting.
He had already signed up 40% of the land before the other guy even showed up and continued signing people. My sense is that they voted for drilling because they have no other choice. Family farms are rapidly disappearing in this country even though most farmers or their wife's have a second job to subsidize their farm.
I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else
I'll tell you what. I was afraid going in that it would be mindless propaganda, and I was sure of it when Smug Environmental Man drove into town in his pick-up truck.
And I was wrong. The twist at the end was brilliant. When all was done, it was a thoughtful and fair exploration of the theme. A sobering look at the big corporation and at an America that is in desperate straits.
