Judging from the tv commercials, I think the advertisers assume the viewership is nearly entirely female, and I'm guessing that's mostly correct. I think this is mostly watched by straight females and some gay men. I would bet most straightguys will run a mile from this - just the thought of two homos kissing, etc. Their loss.
At any rate, I love the show and hope it doesn't get cancelled.
Straight woman here. In case you're curious, my other favorite shows still in production are Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, The Middle, SNL, Daily Show and Stephen Colbert. The last three, plus Parks and Rec, have no gay characters. On The Middle one secondary recurring character - the daughter's boyfriend (!!!) is gay. Modern Family of course has a gay couple, who are very funny, but rather tepid romantically. Big Bang has the oddest vibe, -very like Frasier. The lead actor is gay but plays someone who's asexual. Another character, Raj, is reminiscent of Chandler Bing, ostensibly straight but with feminine interests and tastes that are constantly pointed out.

Straight female. I started watching this because I already was watching/watched Popular, Nip/tuck, American Horror Story, and Glee and loved all 4 of them. Then I found out they were all created by the same guy and that he had one more show somewhat based on himself. Love this one too. Ryan Murphy is amazing.

Straight male viewer here. I love this show and think its hilarious. However I think you hit all of the major points in your post and accept that I am probably a 1%er for the audienceship of this show. Homophobia, unfortunately, limits who's going to watch this right out the gate. We're SUPPOSED to live in some sort of modern era where homosexuality is accepted and seen as a (ha!, get it?) new normal. But this is not the case more often than it should be, with many people have a schizophrenic sort of reaction to open homosexuality. They are accepting and smiling to a gay person(s) face and spitting venom and brimstone behind their backs. It's a shame too, because as another poster said, the relationship between the two lead males actually seems authentic and it's a joy to watch two people (fake or not) with that kind of chemistry. Great show!
