I Liked the Shot of the Little Guy During the Interview
Not sure what to make about the theories or the film theorists here, but I did enjoy the part where the filmmakers lingered on the medium shot of the "little man" sitting next to Jack during the interview...the filmmakers would faintly slow down the shot, and re-wind it over and over, until it looked like the little guy was "brought to life in a new way" and continually looking at Nicholson with barely contained disgust.
It seemed to be a lesson in how to manipulate a few seconds of film to get an entirely different effect.
I also liked how they cut to another scene, early on at the Overlook, with Barry Nelson telling the guy to go put Jack's bags in his room and how the guy's answer: "OK" -- was rather angry and abrupt. And then the little fellah stomps away.I never noticed THAT the first time I saw The Shining either.
The rest of the movie may have been a bunch of hooey, but all this concentration on this one small, minor character -- who I honestly didn't even remember as BEING in those scenes -- was kind of fascinating to me.
