Fun movie, interesting theories, but crazy ones none the less.
I really enjoyed this, I think what grabbed me was all the background stuff Kubrick had in the movie. So much I never really noticed before. Like disappearing items occurring regularly in the movie, but in a way most wouldn't notice the first time. Ultimately, my personal idea is that Kubrick is using history to sort of display the concept of all the terrible things that have happened on this land. They possess Jack and want him to trap his family into this purgatory as well. It all comes down to creating an atmosphere that aids the telling of what's a ghost story. I think the wars and tragedies with Indians are pretty legit. It's given reference on more than one occasion. To me, it's a backdrop to the history of this land and how deep the anger of the dead really is. The history of this place is what sort of grabs me as a viewer I think. A decaying woman, a giant party that Jack becomes trapped in, two little girls, and a river of blood. It's those type of details that make it a great ghost story that goes beyond the generic haunted house concept.
Now that said, some of these theories are hilarious. Some on purpose, and others not so much. Kubrick using his films as a platform to reveal that he faked the moon landing is a bit much to me. I think all of the stuff put is a mixed bag of character development and a funny little inside joke here and there. Overall though, it's fun to watch these theories unfold and discuss them with other viewers. I think it's a nice little exploration of a classic that simply creates interest in wanting to create your own theories which is part of the fun in watching a movie like The Shining.
