The Shining wasn't about an already off kilter man who goes off the deep end and tries to kill his wife and child, it's about Indians, Nazis and sexuality?? Ooooh-Kay. Thanks for clearing that up.
"He came home." - Dr. Sam Loomis from the original HalloweeN
My exact reaction! Well, you didn't include the Apollo symbolism, don't forget that. I wonder what Stephen King makes of all this? It's, after all, a mighty fine book.
What do you think the hidden subtexts are of us having the same reaction?????
And the book is the reason why I've never really liked the movie. I think Kubrick did a poor job of adapting it AND he changed too much of the story. It's really a shame when you consider how closely he followed A Clockwork Orange & The Short Timers (which was made into Full Metal Jacket).
I had the op to see Rm 237 in a double feature w/The Shining a few wks ago & it was actually a fun experience: when we were watching the movie after the "doc" (Rm 237 isn't really a documentary) we were all laughing hysterically at the scene where Ullmann's crotch aligned w/the letter tray!
