The DVD of Room 237 contains a roundtable discussion between Vitali, Asher, Wiedner, and Mick Garris which is a lot more balanced that just listening to any of them in isolation. For example, I think that the others were quite correct in pointing out that Vitali didn't meet Kubrick intil the mid-1970s, long after anything related to 2001 would have transpired. They also pointed out that Kubrick was very secretive and likely wouldn't have told anybody that his films were truly about. Not only did he refuse to answer many questions during his life, but Kubrick also said on a few occasions that he wanted everyone to have a different take on his films. It's not a failure to interpret to film correctly: all interpretations are equally valid.
The roundtable pretty much presents the final word on each issue and Vitali's denials come off as weak and vague. I think a lot of people would rightfully challenge his authority on all things Kubrick.
