Interesting concept, flawed execution
I think in general this was an interesting concept for a documentary, but it sort of fell flat for me for several reasons.
1) I assumed this was supposed to be a meta-analysis of the various theories floating around about the meanings/symbolism/secrets of The Shining. When I say meta-analysis, I mean like a review of all the various theories and then some sort of summary by the filmmaker about his/her thought on what all of this means. Are the theories valid, are the theorists crazy, why are people obsessed with the film, etc. I really did not see that overarching theme in this doc, which is something I have seen in other documentaries.
2) I could not really connect with the theorists since we did not see their faces. I liked that the doc was very visual and used visuals to make points, but seeing the faces, non verbals and body language would have gone a long way to making this more satisfying for me. For example, Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles featured a lot of footage of Justin Duerr talking about, thinking about, investigating and agonizing abut the meaning of the Toynbee Tiles.
3) I think the use of existing footage to tell the story (rather than filming reenactments, etc.) was okay, but was sort of overdone. In some places, I found is distracting and a bit out of place (like there were shots of clouds and eagles flying and such...really?)
So all in all, it was an interesting watch, I just wish the filmmakers would have posed and answered some cogent questions about the nature of perception, the nature of obsession, and why this is or is not important.
