'The Timberline Hotel doesn't really have a room 217'
So says one of the nuttier presenters, in order to imply some deeper meaning to the choice of the number 237. He claims that the official explanation is untrue (that the number was changed so guests wouldn't be spooked by staying in the "haunted" room, as the hotel did not have a room 237 but did have a room 217), and that if you contact the hotel, they'll tell you that there isn't and has never been a room 217 at the hotel. Well, I called his bluff, and got this little message back from the Timberline:
Thank you for your interest in Timberline Lodge.
The exterior of the building and the snow cat ride were used in The Shining. We have a room 217 it is just a standard room with two beds. We do not have a 237. People often ask for room 237.
