Confused about certain shots.

I live in Australia and on the DVD I have of The Shining(Released in the box set with Eyes Wide Shut, Clockwork Orange, 2001, Full Metal Jacket & A Life In Pictures) I swear the scenes of Danny & Wendy watching TV & Wendy walking into the lobby and seeing all the skeletons and cobwebs aren't in my copy of the movie. Were they made for the documentary or is there an alternate version?

Also I liked this documentary, it's interesting to hear what other peoples thoughts on The Shining are, you have to take them with a grain of salt and acknowledge that this is people's opinions, not solid fact or truth.

I have that box set too :)

There are 2 versions of The Shining - The North American print which runs at 143 mins 45 seconds and the European print which runs in at 114 mins and 43 seconds.

We, my friend, have the shorter European print, which was actually Kubrick's prefered version.

What our DVD's are missing can be found here:

If you are a completist then you need to hunt down a region 1 DVD.

Ahh, thank you for clarifying that and sorry about the late reply. =) I may have to try and get a copy of the reigon 1 dvd cut.

Where have you heard that the European print was his preferred version? I've never seen anything that attests to that fact.

According to film-historians, Kubrick first released the longer cut but then thought there was a few things that could be left out to make it flow better, So he recut the film and sent out directions to theaters pointing out what to cut in the delivered copies.

Though I'm not all sure about that last part since usually a recut needs some tweaks in audio so that the sound from the cut scene don't bleed into the scene around it. This because of the fact that in 35mm film with optical sound the sync of audio-video is actually off by almost as second (18 frames if memory serves) to compensate for the fact that the audio-pickup can't be placed at the same spot as the lens and the picture needs to project while standing still while sound requires continuous movement.

This means that when you cut and splice a release-print for any reason. You see the image jump slightly at the cut to the other strip of film but the audio continues uninterrupted for 18 frames until the splice comes into the sound-pickup.

So he would have to instruct people to cut his film in such a way that the shot before the cut wasn't compromised visually and the sound didn't bleed into the next shot in a unappealing way. And knowing him to be kind of a perfectionist it is kind of unlikely that he would leave such an alteration in the hands of people trained mostly for make-do-cuts of damaged film-sprockets.

...It's weird, I have seen this movie numerous times but I never recalled the cobweb/skeleton scene either.

Same here, I was like "uh, I just watched the movie not too long ago but I don't remember this part..."

Me niether was it a deleted scene?

reply

Oh thank God. I thought I was going nuts. I'm a huge fan of this film, and I couldn't for the life of me recall that scene.

The European print also cuts out the 2 minute 35 second alien ship landing scene.
