I guess I'm just not that amused by displays of mental illness

I was surprised at how frustrating, maddening, and TEDIOUS it felt to sit through this.
(I imagine not unlike what it would feel like to be trapped in a room for two hours with a bunch of blathering nuts.)

Considering the rave critical reviews, I expected something compelling-- so I powered through, expecting some sort of payoff. There was none.

This "exercise" didn't just seem pointless, but also a bit cruel.
Indulging and legitimizing the wild fantasies and delusions of barely-in-touch obsessives serves no purpose. It's not illuminating, and it's definitely not entertaining.

You pretty much summed up exactly how I feel. Only watched it because I saw some smart people saying how interesting it was. Got through it, even though it took me 4 viewings to finish it because I kept falling asleep. And the only thing I got out of it was that these people are bat sh!t insane. Only interesting thing for me was playing it forward and backwards together.

It's not the theories presented in this movie that are of any interest to me. But what interests me about this documentary is just that the movie itself could have inspired so many people to dig so deeply into it, on these bizarre Quixotic quests to derive some kind of meaning where there isn't any. It's kind of fascinating and at times even impressive the kind of logical leaps are made in this film by the various presenters of their theories. However if you found it to be too self-indulgent, no one is putting a gun to your head. Simply turn it off.

It's disturbing because these idiotic lunatics function on a daily basis and they're not severely beaten every time they open their mouths. It's a horror movie.

I'm very pleased to see how many people were injured from watching a film about a film. Even one of Stanley Kubrick's technicians said he always thought that was Kubrick's modus operandi. To injure a viewer with a film. SUCCESS!

If Nicholson said there were SO many rewrites and changes to the script on a daily basis that even he stopped reading them - then perhaps more things were actually intended in THE SHINING film, than you'll ever realize.

The Kubrick film IS far superior, in every way.
