The Playgirl mag in the lobby.

The number 13 was pointed out on the back of the girl's jersey,
There was the number 31 on the cover of the Playgirl magazine.
Mirror? Symmetry? Purpose? Significance?

reply

Coincidence.
But I did find it funny that Jack would be reading it in the first place. Was it just there or did he bring it with him?
As for the doc, it's definitely entertaining. Ridiculous yes, but a hoot listening to these folks and their 'theories'

But the film is about the artistry of Kubrick's film as an object provoking thought. You're not meant to sit in judgement of the thoughts it provokes but rather appreciate that it provokes them and is clearly a very layered piece of work, utilising the components of filmmaking as a visual art to the fullest extent. The documentary is an awakening not an end in itself.

I remember Douglas Gordon's 24 Hour Psycho installation from the '90s, in which the artist appropriated Hitchcock's film and slowed it's running time to 24 hours. It was fascinating. (The artist also simultaneously projected The Exorcist and The Song of Bernadette against each other on the same screen.) I would love to see The Shining run forwards and in reverse; the imagery this created in the documentary looked incredible.

Kevin McLeod's (aka Mstermnd) essay is a terrific read; dense and academic in nature you can see why he declined to participate (though he likes the film). McLeod takes in and considers all of the information Kubrick is communicating to the viewer and posits that Kubrick was creating a new visual and subliminal language. Well worth reading. It will
change your perception of film as an art form and make you realise how staggeringly lazy most filmmakers are.

For myself, it's like having a small sampling of how Kubrick's mind worked, the sheer height of his intelligence. That shouldn't really surprise anyone.

I reckon Kubrick is saying the Nazi's at NASA are jerking you off with the Apollo 13 hoax ;)
