Bear and the blowjob

In The Shining, there is an infamous scene involving a bear like crearure creature and felatio. I was expecting Room 237 to duscuss this, but they didn't even gloss over it. Does anyone actually know what it meant? Knowing Kubrick, there has to be some symbolism behind it.

That was guy in a bear costume fellating another guy. They were the ghosts of people from a costume party hooking up in one of the rooms. Probably thrown in the way it was because of how surreal it was.

The book had some pretty explicit sexual content that was kind of creepy, that scene (I don't remember if it was in the book) seemed like an attempt to duplicate that in the movie.

I've got me git-finder set to pansy...

there is some web site with streaming audio where some of these people from this film talk even more about the Shining (in this same fashion) and they discuss the bear (briefly). Sorry I dont recall the site just now.

Yes, to me it was the creepiest moment in the entire film for some reason. I've believed this since I first saw the film 15 years ago.
People have offered explanations about its symbolism to me, but none are satisfactory.

Believe it or not, this was a rare occasion that Kubrick straight-sourced King. The book even gives the scene context...but I forget what it was.

It was actually a guy in a dog costume. The guy he was fellating was the owner of the hotel and a notorious gangster, who happened to be gay. The incident takes place at a masquarade ball on new year's eve in the '20s.

Danny, with his special powers, could see images the hotel projected from its past with little effort. The point of the scene is to show that the hotel had become so powerful that even Wendy, with no powers, could see the images the hotel was projecting.

Apparently BEAR AND THE BLOWJOB was the working title of the film, but King made Kubrick change it back. ;)

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

So, a new take on the 70's / 80's action series B.J. and the Bear, right? Except that show didn't have blowjobs, thank GAWD!

It's based on flashback scene in the book that was cut out of the movie. While Kubrick made some changes, a lot of the more dynamic elements in the movie are pretty close to the book.
