A disappointing departure from season 1 and 2.

The first 2 seasons of Black Mirror were amazing. The overarching theme being that the evolution of technology will likely have unexpected and terrifying implications. The concepts explored were new and interesting. It made you really question the ethics of transhumanism.

I don't see the same themes in the new season. The concepts are not all thought provoking and the dangers simply come from one persons misuse of technology rather than the technology itself. It just doesn't have the same tone as the original.

One thing lacking in the Netflix episodes is subtlety...the "technology can be very dangerous if we're not careful" mantra is much more blatant and in-your-face this time around.

The Fifteen Million Merits episode (season 1, episode 2) was extremely blatant and in-your-face.

reply

yeah, but it was sensitive and dealt with how people feel rather than all this superficial dramatisation

reply

Agreed. Previous seasons were challengingly smart and thought provoking in a disturbing and devastating way. This season felt like it is a dumbed down version of something once unique and complex. I am not complaining, I enjoyed the most of the new episodes but imho now it is just lacking most of the good things that made this show amazing.

I am Baffled that the ratings are so good. 8.8-9.4!? No way

reply

It is almost always the same with the ratings of popular shows. They will probably go down in the future. Balance out itself. Weird algorithm.

I think that Nosedive and Men Against Fire pulled it off well. San Junipero was just stupid though.

reply

Wrong.

Life! Don't talk to me about life.

I think pacing is a problem with this season. There's been a few times where I remarked that the episode doesn't have to be as long as it is to make the point that it's making. San Junipero and the bees episode in particular could use some heavy editing.

reply

This season is much less cynical and nuanced than the other two. Everything is just in your face. I miss the dark humor.
