San Junipero: here's what's unsettling

A lot of people are saying the episode ended well. I think it may actually be more sinister than that. Isn't it suggesting that a person's brain gets copied onto a drive before they die? For that's the case, the stream of consciousness gets cut off and therefore you actually die and an exact copy of you enjoys the afterlife.

It's one of those sexy ideas that has been seriously discussed over the past decade or so by leading futurists, most notably Ray Kurzweil, who famously believes that we are headed towards a technological singularity that will allow us to transcend our biological mortality and create a human-machine civilization that will incorporate AI, genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics.

It was the premise behind that one horrible Johnny Depp movie that was universally panned, but if you wanna delve into the subject further you might want to consider reading some of Kurzweil's books or checking out his documentary, Transcendent Man.

i think you are confusing transfer with teleportation ala star trek, when you are dying at each teleportation, the result after transfer it's identical copy of you but not really you anymore

we don't know their science, if they were able to detect conscience in brain and literally transfer it to digital form (after all brain is just electrical impulses) emptying brain and not just creating cult then sign me up, if it's just copy i am not very excited but unless there will be better option i would still opt for it

No, I don't think the show was saying that at all. Some people just took it that way because they more easily imagine the brain and consciousness being backed up rather than transferred. The show seemed to be saying to me that they were transferred. I think the show is smart enough to see the difference and would've brought up if it wasn't a transfer.

I never anything for the swim back.
