why so many episodes set in present day?

i mean, black mirror is set in a weird future by default. the only episode before netflix that was set in present day (the national anthem) is not one of the best, and doesn't feel like the other 6 episodes. it just feels off.
i watched 3 episodes of the new season. nosedive feels like black mirror, and is set in the future. the other two are in the present, and they absolutely feel nothing like black mirror (and playtest is for sure the worst episode of the series yet). and i already now that san junipero is set in the past. i didn't want spoilers from the 2 last episodes so i didn't read much about them, but they also doesn't seem to be set in the future.
i mean, what the *beep* is happening? why did netflix felt the need to set every episode in today's world when that's not what the series is like? they took all the charm of the "black mirror feel" and just said "*beep* it".

I've only seen the first two episodes of Season 3 but neither. Nosedive or Playtest are in the present day so Im not sure what your gripe is about

reply

playtest is in present day.

"Shut up and Dance" too..

They just made a generic mobile and gave a generic maps

reply

The only one definitely set in the present is Shut Up and Dance. One can argue that though Playtest initially feels like the present time, the gaming technology displayed is certainly not from this day and age.

reply

it's just a dark technology some company achieved and decided to test in secret. it doesn't mean it's future. just like marvel movies have advanced technology, but are set in the present.

reply

Ugh
Don't compare this show to Marvel *beep* *beep*

reply

Nosedive is *beep* Actually the worst episode of this series.

I don't want to hate people, but people make me hate people

reply

the worst would be that existenz ripoff you worship so much

reply

I love how you're attributing all of this to the evil powers of Netflix, when in reality they just host the content. Charlie Brooker is still very much in charge of the ship.

Idiot.

I don't want to hate people, but people make me hate people

reply

None of them are present day. At all. There are no date stamps on any of the episodes. You just seem disappointed that the future may not look that different.

reply

The only ones which could feasibly be set presently are The National Anthem and Shut Up And Dance; all the others feature some sort of technology that suggests a future setting.

reply

And The Waldo moment too.

I'd like to see a Black Mirror episode set in the past... like, a real past not a VR computer past.
