"San Junipero" was absolutely the best of the bunch, at least in my opinion. "Hated in the Nation" was more satisfying and "Shut Up and Dance" was more suspenseful. "San Junipero" was just confusing with its "one week later" tags. It made no sense until the twist. And it was aware it made no sense, and flipped the viewer the bird and did it anyway. I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I wanted to stand up and give it a round of applause, especially after the scenes in the credits. I mean, we played the dren out of the Matrix thing. Matrix wasn't the first, I think Tron may have been, and then that VR movie with Edward Furlong. And then anime got into it with .hack//SIGN and its spinoffs, Log Horizon and Sword Art Online. The idea of a VR matrix has been practically beaten to death, but none of them, as far as I know, addressed death as an entry point into the virtual world. And the ending song was just perfect. I knew of the song before (I grew up in the '80s, which goes to further explain my preference), but this episode is why I bought the song for Rockband 4. I have yet to sing it, but this week's weekly challenge is '80s songs, so I'm definitely doing it this week. (And Belinda Carlisle was in The Go-Go's before, and we all love their song "We Got the Beat.")
