Questions about Shut Up and Dance (spoilers)

1. How the hell did the kid win the fight? That guy was way bigger than him..yes, I know small people CAN win fights with bigger people, but it's not like this kid was some martial arts badass or something.

2. Would the kid really get in that much trouble for looking at child pornography? He's just a kid himself...AND NO I AM NOT DEFENDING PEDOPHILIA. I'm acknowledging the simple fact that a teenager looking at kiddie porn is not the same thing as a 45 year-old looking at it.

Over 18. Yes he'd get into trouble. In fact over 16 he'd get into trouble.
The fact he was working around kids made it even more disturbing.....that 45 year old was once 18 too.

reply

That kid didn't even look 16.

Doesn't matter how old he looked (that's sorts the point). The truth was he was old enough to work a job, which is 16 in the UK and more likely to be 18 as that's how school works here now.
Just because he looks young doesn't make him any less dangerous than the other pedo who was older. He's still a predator, and extremely dangerous.

reply

I'm not saying he shouldn't have been arrested...I'm just saying there's likely mitigating circumstances when it came to sentencing. I don't know how the UK legal system (I'm in the US) is, but I imagine it's more lenient than the US one, which tends to be the strictest (among developed nations).

Then again, I guess it depends on just how young the kids he was looking at were.

Why should age play a role in this?

reply

It's actually a really crucial element of the story. The fact the lead protagonist is so young. Wouldn't have worked as well (or at all) had he been older.

reply

Yeah, I agree with lauren, if he had been older it would have seemed REALLY suspicious that he still cared so much about people seeing him jerk off, but with the younger kid we spend the whole episode thinking the same thing as Bron, "You're a young kid, everybody does it, why are you so worried?" Until you find out at the end that he was actually rather rightfully freaking out, but he also wasn't really the "hero" of the story, apparently the people holding him hostage were.

Shut Up and Dance is one of their episodes that takes a while for everything about it to fully sink in because of the ending, at first I thought it was kind of weak that at the end they just leaked everybody's stuff regardless but I thought more about the troll meme picture they sent and the fact that trolling was all they were doing. It seems like with all of the instructions and time limits that they were doing everything they did for a reason, but in the end the reason was to just set the worst of those people up and make everyone face the consequences of their secretive actions and not get away with it.

That's why the two people who looked at child porn had to fight to the death and the winner was eventually thrown in jail, groups like Anonymous (ironically, I will admit) hate people who look at child porn so the use of the troll face that's usually associated with them was fairly appropriate.
I guess that's what made it so interesting, realizing at the end there WAS a point to everything but it wasn't what we thought. It seemed like everyone was simply being used as a pawn to get money or some other goal, but in reality the whole point was punishment of those people. GOD Charlie Brooker has his finger on the pulse when it comes to this stuff.

reply

It was by far and away my favourite episode. There's few films/TV programmes that leave you thinking like this episode did. It's totally how society views pedophiles. Do we really feel that bad that one died in the hands of another and that he will end up being in prison for far longer than he would've done had it been just Internet viewings. You could also say that they potentially stopped him committing some awful attack on a kid too.
Extremely clever. I believe Chris Morris of brass eye Co wrote this episode which says a lot about the sinister atmosphere of the episode

reply

You seem to regard these people as some kind of hacker vigilantes. But le'ts think about that for a second.
Apart from the child porn watchers, for whom they reserve the harshest 'judgement', so maybe they are actually doing it to punish them or prevent them from committing crimes in the future, they also target prostitution (in Bronn's case) and (in the scooter guy's case) homosexuality apparently. So unless they are some sort of extreme moral 'fundamentalists', it seems they are doing this just for the sake of trolling. Or just for the sake of seeing other people's life getting destroyed.
Which makes the story even more twisted and demented. And really this is what this show's all about.

reply

Prostitution is disgusting. He had a wife and kids. She had a right to know and all he got was her finding out.
I don't believe the other guy was just gay actually as it doesn't fit with all the other storylines.
Imo they (think) they are doing good. Just my interpretation of events.
It's twisted anyway.

reply

I got the feeling they were all pedophiles and Jerome Flynn's character was lying about meeting a prostitute, when he was in fact meeting an underage girl. Just a theory, though.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

reply

The "punishment" fit the crime. I doubt she was but seeing a prostitute when you have a wife is utterly abhorrent hence why he didn't fight to the death.

reply

I should have been more specific in the sense of why should age play a role in the weight of a crime.

Grant discovered raptor eggs in Jurassic Park

reply

It does in the respect of the storyline of this story and what cab happen as time goes on. Sure, this guy could have just looked at one pic and that'd be the end of it but in the case of this story and the way they built it up with the overlooking of the child in the restaurant it wasn't.
I think it starts at a very early age.

reply

I've never studied psychology, so I won't pretend I do. I just find it to be one of those cases where if you are looking at pictures of young children, whether you're fifteen or fifty, it is creepy.

Grant discovered raptor eggs in Jurassic Park

reply

It's more lenient than the US yes. Which is possibly why he got the worst retribution. He'll be done for armed robbery and manslaughter.
This was the episode that really stuck with me I have to say.

reply

So what's the cut-off age for you? Is it ok for a 15 year old to look at 11 year old pics? I'm asking because my friend wouldn't let a 14 year olld date her 11 year old daughter, she thought it was too pedo.

reply

Several laws apply exemptions in age of consent (For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe), I would consider normal any interaction within about 3 years of age. I wouldn't like my kids -don't have any- to have sex at say 13 and the girl getting pregnant due to ignorance or carelessness, but I wouldn't have their heads either, if the push came to shove.

It would be ideal to raise children in a fashion where they can make responsible choices from young ages, however things are not always so ideal in the world (and definitely in most Western societies of 2016 I believe the first sexual experiences routinely begin way before 18. Heck, I'd bet I can track down several 16-year-old boys or girls who have far more experience than thirtysomethings, for what that's worth...)

reply

No child should be looking at child pornography, or indeed any sort of pornography at that age. It messes up kids minds.
I agree with your friend I wouldn't let my child of 11 in any serious way date anyone of any age.

reply

I don't even think the punishment was the top thing on his mind, but more so the embarrassment of being caught and having everyone he knows in on his massive secret. Jail time couldn't have been comfortable to think about either, don't get me wrong. Just don't think he'd commit manslaughter and armed robbery to avoid it. Or, if he truly thought he'd got off scot free, maybe he did.

reply

About your first question - the only reason I can guess the kid won the fight is that he had the gun, which he could use to hit the guy. I thought for sure the other guy would win since he was much bigger than the scrawny kid, and he already had the will to fight to the death.

reply

Anyone else think it would've been a good twist if one of the "victims" refused to do what the hackers said, and they ended up NOT getting their secret leaked? In other words, the hackers would reward you for standing up for yourself, but punish you for foolishly doing whatever they said (like robbing a bank and fighting to the death).

Formerly RIP_Matthew_Abaddon.

reply

That'd have been interesting as far as twists go, but I think it would have ultimately taken away from any right doing the troll was attempting. But then again, he is just a troll at the end of the day so I say bring on the twist!

I watched the episode a couple of times and I took more away the 2nd time, if you remember after the hotel but before the petrol station when Hector is telling Kenny what he done, Hector said they sucked up his whole harddrive. Kennys face started to distort and he started to look alot more panicked.

Kenny probably had alot of child porn on his laptop and also remember how protective of it he was when his sister took it at the start. He even got a lock for the room so she wouldnt take it again (and by default find out what he has been looking at).
He probably had alot of pictures stored on his computer and as far as I know having a large database is a big sentence if you are caught.

reply

I rewatched and caught a lot that I overlooked the first time, but I guess I still managed to miss the thing about HD. It would make a lot more sense, though, so I'll have to look for it again next time.

reply

> Kenny probably had alot of child porn on his laptop and also remember how protective of it he was when his sister took it at the start.

Except that it was obvious that the sister borrowed his computer regularly. He opened the door, saw it was missing, and immediately knew where it was. Plus, he didn't seem to have bothered to put a password on the computer. His sister should have found it within minutes of borrowing it the first time. That's extremely careless of him if there was actually kiddie porn on the computer.

Well I guess it was interpetive, you interpreted as the sister borrowed it regularly, i interpreted it as he saw it was gone and knew that his only other sibling must has taken it,panicked and got it back real quickly incase she found anything.

I think putting the lock on the door was to stop it happening again incase she finally did get to the stash, remember also she was thick,,,,, so I dont think that even if there was saved pics, that they would be the first thing she would go to.

reply

> i interpreted it as he saw it was gone and knew that his only other sibling must has taken it,panicked and got it back

Mum could have borrowed it or it could have been stolen. And, we don't actually know if he had any other siblings. But, he knew right where to look for his computer. It seems that the natural reaction would be to shout, "Hey, who took my laptop?"

> I think putting the lock on the door was to stop it happening again incase she finally did get to the stash

That's what a password would do.

> she was thick,,,,, so I dont think that even if there was saved pics, that they would be the first thing she would go to.

I think snooping around would be the FIRST thing that a little sister would do.

Good Points 👍

reply

Well I think it's pretty safe to say OP has watched child porn....

reply

I've been getting that vibe from quite a few posters tbh

reply

She's I don't think that was what the OP meant at all. They said it depends on how young the girls were he was looking at. A 45 year old looking at a 16 year old is creepy, a 16 year old looking at a 16 year old isn't. I think that's what they meant.

But on further thought over the episode I think he was looking at really young kids. I would like to think something like that would be hard to find and would be far easier to find regular porn but he sure did seem to pull it up pretty fast.

reply

You guys are unbelievable. When this *beep* rapes your child, you'll think differenty.

Lewis Daynes was 18 when he groomed a 14 year old boy through playing minecraft. He lured the boy to his flat, tied him up, raped him and stabbed him in the neck and left him to die.

Don't let age sway your judgement, a paedophile is a paedophile and Daynes had been grooming the boy for years, he was 12 or 13 when they first met online.

reply

I'm acknowledging the simple fact that a teenager looking at kiddie porn is not the same thing as a 45 year-old looking at it.

IMO it is the same thing. It's not the person's fault that they have certain feelings towards something immoral and wrong, but acting upon them puts them in the exact same category. The main character wasn't 12, he was well aware that his actions had consequences and that children are severely affected here.

We've met before, haven't we?
