San Junipero and Afterlife parallel.

Has anyone else noticed the parallel between San Junipero and Heaven? An eternity of good times, except how depressing it sounds when you put it into perspective. Endless fun is not so fun to think about.

No, I bet you're the first.

I was hoping for more of a discussion. But sarcasm is the way to do it. Good one bro.

I'm sorry, amigo. I really liked the episode, and every time I think of it, "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" starts playing in my head on repeat. A touch on the nose, but still the perfect song to cap the episode.

The reality doesn't sound bad at all, especially knowing you can choose to "unplug" any time you wish.

reply

Exactly. People do things to go to heaven, but it really feels like a meaningless endless void. What's really the point of unlimited happiness? I mean how do you define happiness if there is no despair? And some people thought this episode had a happy ending.

Also I really should have phrased my discussion question differently. The heaven-San Junipero parallel was pretty obvious.😛

reply

I don't think it's necessarily about unlimited happiness, that's just the highlight of what they showed us. They do mention the Quagmire being a place where people go just to feel anything. Jenny's outburst at the end about not knowing who somebody is because of all the intricacies of life point that out too I think.

There's also the colder opinion that you're at least conserving the consciousness that could still benefit everybody. Imagine if Einstein was still kicking around on the San Junipero beach and feeding us new research? This would take generational learning to a new level.

Personally, I thought this had the happiest ending because the people I was brought closest to in the episode, and whom I genuinely liked despite their flaws, basically just made the best they could out of a *beep* situation: death.

On the other hand, damn that was the slowest episode of all! :P

They won't age. They won't have to eat. So they won't have to earn their bread too. They will just have good time. That is not living. It's a good thing they found each other. So they can have fun for some days. But after that I don't see any point of living there. This made me depressed as hell.

reply

Wow! I can't believe no one's ever made that comparison!

You are quite the perceptive one.

Less than forget. But more than begun.

reply

Imdb is never the best place for discussion as you can see. Just *beep* mostly

reply

Seems that way.

The board has had some great discussion on this. I think you might have had rather a good time talking about it had you bothered to read some of the many existing San Junipero topics, and remarked within those.

"You're right. I do do that. And I blame you for never thanking me for it."

reply

Thanks.

That wasn't heaven, that was hell.
