Man against fire (spoiler question)

Why does the soldier cry at the end? Hasn't his memory been erased.

reply

I wondered, too.

reply

Yes, his memory was wiped and he came home seeing his dream girl, even though it was only in his head.

reply

Either happy to be home, or repressed memories he doesn't understand surfacing emotionally. Or both.

Poop? Poop.

reply

Or his memory wasn't wiped and he's just imagining seeing his girlfriend again while he's actually in prison?

reply

Memory not erased imo. His options were either (a) memory erased, rejoin group, or (b) memory not erased and relive murders in a loop. Guessing he chose the latter and he was dropped off in front of his (now) dilapidated home and was tearing up as he is on the verge of 'reliving' the murder of his girlfriend/wife. That's another topic, but I assume that 'prison' is not a physical space but more of a virtual prison..forced to experience a virtual reality, aware of its fakeness, but powerless to stop it. I'm guessing that all the recruits are convicts given a 'second' chance to be a mind-wiped soldiers. The crime he committed was probably related to the girl in his simulated dream sequences and in the final scene. All soldiers are given dream sequences of someone from their past who they don't remember, but who they will respond positively to (who better than someone from your past who you once loved). In the final scene, you see he now knows who she is and comes to the realization he murdered her..It's the first step in fulfilling his prison sentence of watching 'all those murders in a loop'.

Am I missing something??? When did it show he killed her??

reply

People can extrapolate that he killed her during the dream sequence when he is having sex with her (when she has her bra on). You see his MASS start glitching out and there are one or two instances of red blood covering the screen.

This theory would work, but it doesn't make sense that he is in his uniform at the end. If he is relieving his murders, he should be in his regular civilian clothes because the murder probably happened before he joined the military.... unless, one of his first assignments as a soldier is to kill the people closest to him.

Also, he has rings on his shoulder which I don't think was ever shown in the beginning of the episode which means the last sequence is probably a future event which kills this theory. Had this been the actual twist, it would have been great, but too many clues point that he's not reliving his mental prison.
