Nerd in San Junipero?

What was the purpose of the nerd character in San Junipero-- the one who tries to hook up with Yorkie at the arcade games and whom Kelly is presumably going to hook up with in the 2000s? There seems to be too much attention paid to the character for him to just be a throwaway, but he never really seems to play any significant role in what's otherwise a pretty solid hour of television.

He is us, the audience. We relate to him. 

I know that I sure did.

Oh for God's sake!

I equate him to being like Yorkie, in that he also got a second chance at life. It seems that in real life he was a shy nerd who probably never had the courage to talk to girls and so lived alone until he died. Now he has this second chance to do it all over again and he's trying to force himself to be more social.

Great point. I thought they were going somewhere with it but ended up wasting the character completely.

Shows like these throw in clues as the story develops. Her disinterest in him is a clue to fact she isn't there to find a guy just like her sticking her foot out in the rain in the alley scene was a clue she was paralyzed.
