Was "San Junipero" a happy ending?

Contrary to other episodes, "San Junipero" seems to end on an upbeat note. I watched it last night, but as I thought more about it through the day, I started to question if it was quite as cheerful an ending as it appeared.

Obviously, this is getting into territory that's highly subjective, but I feel that part of the beauty of death is no longer feeling pain (physical or emotional). Both Kelly and Yorkie, as well as Wes, show that pain is still very much a part of existence in San Junipero. Kelly also explains that the souls at The Quagmire are devoid of real feeling and purpose, and she certainly is quite torn over the possibility of not potentially rejoining her husband and daughter in the hereafter. Despite the ending's optimistic outlook, we have to imagine that she will live out an eternity of nagging regrets over her decision to remain with Yorkie instead.

I'm interested to hear others' thoughts on the episode's ending.

I agree that you can look at it in different ways which is what is great about the whole series. In this episode you can look at it is a great opportunity to keep "living" and of course part of living is pain. But as far as making that decision, I think they mention that you can opt out at any time so that's a good thing. I have also read that it is the most cynical ending because it points out there really is no afterlife unless you purchase it and technology provides it.
