so disappointed

this morning i finally finished watching the Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. it was marvellous. Im still amazed at how fantastic Ramin Karimloo is.

I was lucky enough to see this twice in London in 09 both times starring Ramin.

The only downside of this whole thing for me was at the end when 4 of the previous phantoms came out. I know one is the current, one was the canadian phantom and then Anthony Warlow was the australian one. The 4th phantom, I read, is the newest phantom for 2012. Unfortunately he was the weakest. While the other phantoms had strong vibrant voices his was much more lightweight and not at all vibrant.

The reason why im so disappointed? Im finally back of to London this year to see Phantom of the Opera again and realised it would be him i'd be watching.

such a letdown.

He might have grown into the role, and improved. He might be sick and need an understudy.

I think he sounds like Michael Crawford, but I know I'm going to get attacked for that.

I won't attack you, I do agree with you. When I heard him on the POTO25 I thought he sounded a LOT like a younger Michael Crawford (like, Hello Dolly era MC) - so perhaps that's what they wanted, someone who had that type of sound that MC has. problem is, I don't think he's quite grown into it yet (at least, not as of POTO 25).

It was jarring to hear him with the other Phantoms. It'll be interesting to see what phan reception is once he takes the role on stage.

See, ever since the movie came out, I've had this idea in my head, that the Phantom wasn't so much a musical genius, as just very ahead of his time. Thats the feeling I got off of Gerard Butler's Phantom, and thats the kind of feeling I got when I heard Peter's voice at the end of the 25th

reply

I kinda get that.

I saw him more as a musical genius who perhaps wasn't a polished performer himself. He knows the theory and can educate Christine and can write great music, but as a singer he falls short of the perfection needed of opera.

But, Peter Jöback did stick out among the others, with a higher, more pop-py vocals. I think the darkness of the character, hiding in shadows and underground caverns makes a deeper, more rock influenced vocal more appropriate.

Anged,

That makes sense considering, ahem, the performances in the movie.

The Phantom is supposed to be both a musical genius and way ahead of his time.

You're so right, he really did sound like Michael Crawford. But not in a good way. As someone else noted, more a young, pre-Phantom Crawford.

thought I'd update this post

I went back to London in October and did go see POTO like i wanted. was soooo looking forward to it.

Phantom was played by Earl Carpenter. His singing was magnificent. Beautiful voice. The letdown for me was he played Phantom as a sort of character not a man. It was disappointing. It just looked silly.

I have no idea who played Christine (cant find my program right now) but whoever she was she was an awful actess. Absolutely dreadful.

The rest of the cast were fantastic. The woman who played the Primadonna opera diva was probably the best I've seen. Funny, good acting and perfect voice.

I did want to go back and see Phantom again before i left but i caught a cold and didnt want to annoy the audience with my constant coughing.

reply

Was Earl meant to be playing him, or was he a stand in?

The website shoes marcus lovett and sofia escobar as the phantom and christine.

reply

the program has Earl Carpenter listed no mention of anyone else

Don't knock the understudies, Rick Hillsabeck was brilliant, as Phantom.

I wasn't knocking the understudies. The OP didn't want to see him as the phantom and I was simply suggesting she might get an understudy instead.

reply

I never thought of an understudy. that might be interesting. Im still intending to go see Phantom even if Joback is the lead. I wont write him off just yet even tho he's not my ideal phantom and i really really cant picture him as good as the others.

Even tho Michael Crawford and Ramin Karimloo have different type voices, they both are the perfect Phantom because when you watch them sing you see the emotion in their voices. There aren't many singers who can do that.

You can understand the torture the phantom has been thru when MC sings (and Ramin)

reply

I agree. I love the deeper voices of Ramin, Gerard (yes I'm a fan of the movie, it was my intro to Phantom), and the three that sang with Sarah/Music of the Night.

reply

I just saw the newest Phantom at the West End show in September. I'm thinking this is the same guy. I thought he was brilliant. He sounds really different and really powerful as the Phantom in the actual show.
I was very impressed.

I was once attempting to quickly explain what Joback's singing was like, and I described him as 'Sort of sounds like Michael Crawford except not as great'. It's an odd thing, really, because I (as an avid MC fan) think that if Joback's voice was just has a little more resonance and strength and he could go just a little deeper, etc. then I think I'd really love him in the role. As it stands, though, I'm not terribly impressed.

It's funnier in Enochian.
