Read Susan Kay's novel, "Phantom." It's really wonderful, tragic, spellbinding, and sad, but fills in a lot of the missing pieces.

As I remember it, he was in a travelling circus (and ran away from it), so although the story takes place in Paris, there's no guarantee that he is French.

IIRC, in the book Erik thought that he, like Christine, was Swedish, but he couldn't remember his last name because his parents had abandoned him as a child.

As if it weren't heartbreaking enough, right?
