Why didn't Michael Crawford sing?

Except for the final chorus of "Music of the Night" in the ending ceremonies, Crawford never opened his mouth. Is his voice gone or did they just not pay him enough to perform?

Dead or home in 10 min. Either way, it'll be one hell of a ride.

neither. It was his choice.

There was such excitement when you came on stage at the last of the three 25th-anniversary Phantom gala performances at the Royal Albert Hall. You didn’t appear at the first two.

I couldn’t have gone to any of the others because that wouldn’t have been right for the audience here [at the Palladium, where Wizard was performing concurrently], but I certainly wanted to be at that last one on the Sunday night. I said that I couldn’t quite deal with the pressure of singing, and they were fine that, so I just walked on.

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

When Andrew Lloyd Webber introduced Sarah Brightman, he said, "Sarah has agreed to sing for us." I thought at the time that that phrasing was a little odd, as if there had been some story behind it. Now I understand that he also meant, "...even though Michael has NOT agreed." I get a little hint that not everybody was entirely "fine with it," as Crawford told the interviewer.

I thought he didn't sing because he had a performance later that night and couldn't strain his voice. I'm pretty sure it's this version. Check the trivia to make sure because I may be thinking of a totally different performance.

Yes! I am correct for once with my horrid memory! He had already song at a matinee that day and had an evening performance that night so he did only as much as he could without straining his voice. I really thought I remembered Mr. Webber saying that at some point.
