They didn't do a very good job of making Raoul look old in the beginning

He just looked like young Raoul with some facial hair and a pair of glasses slapped on his face, imo. But other than that (and the chandelier not crashing due to how old the theater is), it was a wonderful production of Phantom. One of the best productions I've seen. The Vegas production comes first in my list. Too bad it's closing in September. :-(

pretty much... it's all about the convenience of getting him ready for the next scene. where as the phantom, they could make it much more crazy because thats the way he looked at all times

its cause of the altered timeline to fit with LND

Let me help you all out. First there are program changes to POTO which now say the main show takes place late 19th century- The concert (look at Rauol looking so much younger and no wheel chair) follows this continuity.

1893: Act 1
1894: Act 2
somewhere in early 1895 Christine finds Phantom and they have a night of passion.
Phantom decides to leave and does not want Christine to find him. My guess is he burns down Opera house to fake his death. Giry's with no place to go accompany Phantom to New york

Early 1905: LND
Late 1905: Auction

Can I ask how you know the auction takes place in 1905? Is it in the new program as well?

If you were seeing it live at the RAH with some distance between you and Raoul, you would believe it. Given the fact that there are closeups, in HD no less, you have to let a little bit slide. Ultimately, this is a taping of a live stage show, and the design elements are for stage, not screen.

I felt the same when people criticized the new Peter Pan saying they could see the wires where they couldn't see them in the Mary Martin version. Apart from cinematography being completely different, we also are blessed in this modern era of media to have high definition.

That's because that's what he was. It wasn't actually an old person. You could tell the Phantom's makeup was fake too. Its a play.
