Glad They Didn't Cast Downey, Jr.

I really like Robert Downey, Jr. Even before Iron Man revived his career, I was a fan. I saw "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and was astonished by how good he was, and have been glad to see him have such a successful resurgence. However, I don't think Perry Mason would be nearly as good with him in the title role, which I read the other day was the original plan.

Having an unknown works so much better in this case, because Downey brings so much with him. We'd be watching Robert Downey, Jr., not Perry Mason. Plus, the guy they chose is perfect. Both he and the Paul Drake actor just utterly nail their roles, and I just can't see myself being as sold on the character if it were a megastar in the role.

Downey does look a lot like the OTHER ACTOR who did the OLD TV SHOWS from back in the 50's and 60's.

And this actor doesn't really look that much like the other one who did the TV SHOW.

So DOWNEY would also have that much going for him if he had been PERRY MASON for the HBO VERSION.
