Well, I like most of the actors/actresses in this live action. And considering I have seen quite a number of Japanese live actions (film and TV Series), I'm confident they could pull it off. Of course there are examples of bad live actions that I've seen, but I figure that live actions all depends on the director chosen to bring a manga (anime, for some non-manga readers) to life. Let's just hope that the chosen director is up for the job and not someone who was assigned this project just because he is really good with special effects. I haven't seen any of his work.
As for the Yuusuke Watanabe, the screen writer, I have only seen both the live action of Gantz which he wrote. Honestly, I didn't like it.. but then again, I don't even know the source material at all.
Some people might object that even a lay person who isn't steeped-in-knowledge of the material should be able to enjoy this movie, however, I have to point out, live actions are different. So approaching these types of films are different too. I'm going to check out his other works now, God knows, I love Japanese live actions, some of them are surprisingly good.
The absence of the characters in this movie then can be pointed out, my guess, in this way: A) it's a two part movie, maybe they will be introduced in the sequel. B) I read the manga and the manga isn't finished; those missing characters play a huge part in the history of the manga's present world. Either they couldn't include these characters because they can't yet formulate a decent story for it onscreen (not much is revealed about them yet) and risk angering loyal fans of the manga. The manga is serialized Monthly as opposed to Weekly, so the delivery of the story to us is slower. Also, it could be troublesome for the mangaka.
I think for me it's the latter. If not, it could be like the Rurouni Kenshin film. The first film basically establishes its characters. Its second and third sequels is where it gets meaty - if you catch my drift.
My only worry is, as you briefly pointed out... RPG. If you get the feeling this is going to be like a RPG, then I am also worried. Given that the director chosen is someone who is known in Japan for special effects, I worry this movie will be just a drill-kind for him to experiment with effects and not focus or deal in the story or its characters.
Btw, I am excited for this live action movie. Did I mention I love live actions? I really do. Movie versions as well as TV versions.
