Favorite live-action manga adaptations?

What is your favorite film based on a manga?
Doesn't have to be a Japanese production.

Battle Royale? Edge of Tomorrow? Death Note? Speed Racer? Blood Last Vampire?

Mine would be Oldboy.

reply

Rurouni Kenshin, the sword fights are simply breathtaking.

reply

Yeah that was a good piece of entertainment.
It really didn't feel like a Cosplay Party some of the other manga adaptations were.

I liked the first one best.

reply

OLD BOY (Korean Version) is pretty Fkd up.

Second is Paprika, the manga inspiration for Inception.

Edge of Tomorrow from All You Need is Kill.

reply

Battle Royale? Edge of Tomorrow? Death Note? Speed Racer? Blood Last Vampire?

Neither Battle Royale nor Edge of Tomorrow were based on mangas. Both were originally novels and the mangas were adaptations of those novels. Neither of them belong in a discussion like this.

And it is insulting you put Edge of Tomorrow there anyway. It is whitewashed racist trash. The United States is a multi-ethnic country so there is no excuse for whitewashing unlike Japan which is a homogenous country.

reply

Fair point with first paragraph.
I've read the manga of both BR and EoT so I just included them.

But your second paragraph, with all due respect I disagree.
And I call it an utter rubbish.
As a Korean, I've been to Japan many times and have made several Japanese friends while living in New Zealand.
None of them are even remotely offended by EoT.
It is not whitewashed racist trash. It is a Hollywood blockbuster with Tom Cruise as the lead and a very good movie at that.
Sure US is multi-ethnic. It isn't called melting pot for nothing.
So?
Do you require an Asian character in every Hollywood movie? ho ho.
Since US is, you know, multi-ethnic? ho ho ho.
The war in EoT was global, it was the world against aliens and the film takes place in Europe.
But where are the Asian soldiers you ask?? Where are the Japanese, to be specific?! US is multi-ethnic! So I expect Japanese soldiers of course!!

Curious: Do you call Kurosawa's Shakespeare adaptations "yellow-washed racist trash" too?

I see that you didn't even tell us what your favorite manga adaptation was.
So I guess you aren't interested with the point of the thread, only picking out mistakes and insulting me using that.

Hilarious how you pointed out EoT is whitewashed racist trash in Shingeki no Kyojin live action movie board, since this is a film which even Japanese people are criticising about changing everyone into Japanese to make the manga's well built world irrelevant for the movie itself.

Either you try again or don't post at all thanks.

So if Japanese people like EoT, they're the same as black people defending slavery?
Amazing logic there man.
The thing is that people weren't offended at all.
"Wah wah no Asians in this movie but it is made in US."
By your standards almost all of Hollywood movies are racist trash.
Comic book movies, war movies, action thrillers, romance, comedy, drama you name it: movies with no Asian in them is racist.
The film's point, message doesn't matter to you all it matters is that you don't see an Asian in the cast so it is racist.
Hollywood movies, or US movies require Asians in them because it is multi-ethnic, if they don't have one they're being racist. Wow.
Screw the star power, screw the direction, screw the great action sequences, it's not fine. This is US movie. No Asians? Dayum, we're racists.
You are making imaginary victims out of this.

As I've said again and as evidenced in my username I am Korean which last time I checked, was part of Asia.
I'm not sure how you are telling me that I'm not Asian.
So kindly go *beep* yourself on this.

Shingeki no Kyojin's manga world was specific with its world.
It is an intriguing set, very much a character on its own just like its inhabitants.
But who am I kidding here, since the movie is made in Japan a homogenous country, they can just have all Japanese character and not be racist.
Screw the original story, screw the mystery, it's okay. We not racist. It's all fine.

I see that you make similar dumb/offensive posts on other boards to troll other users.
Can't figure the beneficial aspect of me replying further to your posts so I'm putting you on ignore.
Troll on, thanks.
Hope I gave you enough laughs and entertainment in your damp basement for the day.

I can never figure out the hostility on IMDB boards, it's like some people live for crushing/humiliating/trolling on internet boards. It's a sad purpose for a life.

Back on what the thread is made for, i didn't dislike Black Butler ( though i haven't seen the anime nor read the manga ). They did some changes like making the main character a female.

A live-comedy adaptation of a manga i loved was Thermae Romae, check it out it's pretty hilarious.

I still haven't watched Parasyte live-action, i heard it will be a 2 parts, probably gonna wait until both are released.

reply

Parasite, unfortunately, suffers from the typical Japanese problem of too much exposition. People and monsters are constantly talking and explaining themselves. Yes, there are cultural differences to be taken into account, but for once I wish that not every little detail needed to be explained by a character.

Also, it cannot decide if it wants to be full-blown horror. The little hand-parasite is just too kawaii at times for this kind of movie.

All in all, some gory special effects but not much more than that.

reply

Yeah it's pretty depressing. Wish this site goes more for people to share their love for movies.

Thermae Romae I shall definitely watch.
Parasyte is well liked by many yet unseen by me. Heard good things so I might see that too.

your responses are intriguingly intelligent for someone on the internet.
I'm sincerely glad to know people like you exist

More like an amazing failure of comprehension on your part.

Slavery was one of the worst crimes against humanity in history yet even in that abhorrent situation, you still had those that were the targets of it defending it. That means that you will always find those that will defend discrimination even if they are part of the group that is being discriminated. It's a phenomenon, nothing more.

By your standards almost all of Hollywood movies are racist trash.

That's right.

movies with no Asian in them is racist.

Any movie with no Asians is not what makes it racist. What makes it racist is having a Hollywood movie take a role of a nonwhite main character and whitewash that character. There is no excuse for it because as I said before (this is now the second time I am repeating this to you):

The United States is a multi-ethnic country so there is no excuse for whitewashing unlike Japan which is a homogenous country.

Another failure of comprehension on your part.

As I've said again and as evidenced in my username I am Korean which last time I checked, was part of Asia.
I'm not sure how you are telling me that I'm not Asian.

I didn't say that because you are Korean you are not Asian. I am flat out saying you are lying when you are saying you are Korean thus you are not Asian. You are lying. White supremacists do this online in order to think they can push their racist nonsense. All your arguments are textbook white supremacist rhetoric. Even that "Kurosawa's Shakespeare adaptations" I've seen used before by white supremacists. Even using the nonsense term "yellow-washing" is another white supremacist talking point.

You're not fooling anyone.

If we stick with Asian productions, I'd like to point out Uzumaki. Like the manga, it oozes delicious creepiness and utter depression. Granted, it is not the most brilliant of movies overall storywise, but very effective.

reply

Oohh I just flipped through second volume in my local library. Human snails?!!!

Anyone seen Another live action? Loved the anime and I bought the poster online but not sure of the movie.

So far the only adaptation of which I've read the original that I thought was descent was Death Note (1 and 2, I have not seen the 3rd yet).
This one is a travesty, the trailer of DBE looked so horrible I'm trying my best to forget it even exists...

Edge Of Tomorrow is not bad, but far behind the manga (I have not read the novel yet).

reply

Third Death Note is a bore. I suggest skipping it, unless you are a huge fan of Matsuyama's L.
I was a big fan of the first two films and thought L was as good as an actor can get to look the part, but it wasn't enough.
It doesn't have anything interesting to do with the premise, just a microwaved reheat of the originals for cash grab.

Thank God you only saw the trailer of DBE.
