Fresh off watching this Film.... Pros and Cons (SPOILERS)

I am up to date with the Manga AND anime (Yes, that includes the OVA Levi - no regrets - ). This movie.... is alright.

Pros -

- The Titans themselves looks creepy as hell and everything about them is exactly on point with the Manga. They look, move and feast accurately creepy +

- Mikasa and Hanji zoe are the only ones I feel that looks and feel like there Manga counterpart. Mikasa has the Look (Since in the Manga, she is said to be the last Asian left) and Hanji personality was SPOT ON. Kudos to them!

- When Eren had to save Armin before getting eaten, etc THAT whole point is play by play to the Manga. Right down to Eren losing his leg. Right down to when Eren was holding the Teeth of the Titan and right down to losing his arm. Kudos to that part as well!

- The whole Eren transforming into a Titan and beating the living crap of the other Titans.... play by play to the Manga. Kudos once again!

Cons -

- EVERYTHING ELSE (Unfortunately)

The location, settings, names. Shikishima (Levi Wannabe?), the commander, NO ERWIN, NO Berntholdt, NO REINER, NO ANNIE???? Like... What the hell?

Those are integral to the storyline!! Without them, it's empty. Eren, Armin, Jean, Sasha, ALL of them dont act like there Manga counterpart!! No Erens mother? father? THOSE ARE ALSO INTEGRAL TO THE MAIN STORYLINE, WHY REMOVE THEM???

In a movie, sometimes its the little details that are more important than the "Bigger" Picture. Therefore out of 10, I would give this a 6/10. The Cons Heavily outweigh the Pros so yeah.... Hope for Part 2?

Did I miss something? How did Drunk Souda and Mikasa knew Eren was the ripped titan? I was really expecting the shock on their faces when Eren emerges from the body and steams like in the manga and anime but they had to save Eren and knew he was inside the nape.

I had the same reaction as Hans when drunk Souda and Mikasa proceeds to save Eren inside the ripped titan. Like 'WTF. How did you know that *beep* How did they knew about the tissue assimilation stuff?

What also irked me is the inconsistencies with the titan's durability and speed. Mikasa and captain apple slices the titans like a hot knife on butter. Even the fatty with axe. Chopping the heels like a marshmallow but failed terribly on the titan that ate the milf and eren. And that fatty judo threw a titan.

I liked Sasha as usual. And Hans of course. The *beep* Eren's acting. The *beep*.

reply

Yeah, Like I said, its the little details that they completely missed.

I guess Drunk Souda / Mikasa just "knew"? LOL yeah, that milf was pretty hot though...too bad she got the short end of the Stick =\

Sasha didn't really show up much and well for Erens acting.... thats for another time lol

Yeah I felt the same...
I guess it's the "connection" they share that allowed her to know, kind of like in the anime she "feels" he's still alive... but it was still weak story telling... Like they had removed 20 minutes of stuff in between (which they actually did!).

Another major point is by then they should not even think of the possibility of hybrids.. they've never seen any. I mean once you know about Eren it makes sense that there might be other, but before Eren you should not even think about it... So there should be no way for them to "know" it's Eren... more great plot in this movie...

You can't cram the entire series of AoT within a 3 hour movie, let alone a 90 minute one. That said I agree with all your pros and and cons. It's just unfortunate that the people who haven't watch the anime will think it's rather shallow.

reply

I just finished watching it, too. Not satisfied at all.

Bad acting became obvious early on. Then throughout the film people behave in ways that range from questionable to outright retarded.

- The mother holding her baby (and later, Mikasa) for some reason deduced that, during a Titans attack, the best course of action was to sit down and cry. And in the event that some guy comes to the rescue, your first priority's not taking the baby with you, you simply run off with him and later have him fetch the baby for you. Smart.

- Then we got the townspeople hiding from Titans in a wooden house, only to be attacked through the roof. Yet instead of lifting the bar that's locking the doors and let themselves out, they just screamed for help. Yep.

- Right before Shikishima's first appearance, all that the scouts seemed to know how to do was run around and get eaten ...while wearing ODMG ...surrounded by buildings.

- During the scene where Eren was about to 'fly' into a horde of Titans, as his fellow soldiers were getting killed left and right, Shikishima chose to stand still on a rooftop, cross his arms, and stare at Eren. Best captain ever.

- Mikasa attempted to take on a Titan with one damaged blade and an out-of-gas maneuver gear when there's plenty of hiding spots around her.

- Souda somehow not only knew the Rogue Titan was Eren, he knew how and where to extract Eren from the Titan's body as well.

Needless to say I will not be watching Part 2. Unless they introduce Annie and include that scene in the Forest of Giant Trees, then I might reconsider.

reply

If memory serves me right - or not - some of those things happen in the anime as well. I could be wrong, but I think they do.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste

reply

I completely agree with everything you wrote, but as for Soda, maybe he's the replacement of Eren's father and know what happened? Since Eren has no father we don't know yet how he got to transform..

Just finished watching the movie and... well, I didn't have too much expectations so here are my pros and cons:

Pros
-The titans look creepy and funny at the same time. Kinda like in the manga and anime. I liked their totally different look, and detailed bodies. It wasn't the best CGI I've ever seen oh, it's very far from that, but it did its job. The titans were spot on.
-Some scenes were brutal and terrifying. I felt the panic, the danger in the first part.
-Loved the lighting and the dark mood of the movie.
-Some scenes, environments looks pretty good.
-Some really cool fighting scenes!

Cons
-Some characters were too different than the manga counterpart.
-Major characters were missing.
-Some key scenes were missing, felt like I skipped a few minutes of the movie.
-The acting wasn't too good, lack of emotions
-So many weird changes and decisions over the manga.
-The characters look.
-The music was mediocre. Actually, nothing special. Compared to the anime, it's pretty weak and it can ruin things.
-The pacing was very varied and I felt that they could put more content into 90+ minutes. The middle part was lacking and slow paced.

Actually some of the changes made the movie somewhat less predictable so it was more exciting to see what'll happen. The changes in the plot were good at least for that.

For me, it's a 6.5 out of 10. Actually I thought it'll be total garbage, but I could enjoy it. I had to forget the anime, but still I missed many things from it. I hope the second part will be somewhat better.

This movie is perfect for anyone who NEVER saw the anime / Read the manga who starts from 0.

But the problem is everyone is expecting a 1:1 scene by scene take in Live action style... We understand its a Movie with only 90 minutes to tell the story but still. I guarantee, if you have Captain Levi in the movie, most of the Negatives suddenly are forgivable lol

reply

"But the problem is everyone is expecting a 1:1 scene by scene "

Not true. But we do expect a faithful adaptation of the STORY. Which they did not do.

reply

Why did didn't they make Shikishima, Levi? Prefect fit. I'm hoping they bring Annie in part 2. Titan Eren needs someone to kick his ass. We need some titan on titan MMA. I hear you on the other characters. I wish they were included.

EDIT: Valid points, both pro and con in this thread. I agree with most of them.

“Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.”

reply

For Levi supposedly because his name is uncommon in Japanese... but the way Shikishima was portrayed, I'm actually happy they decided to skip Levi (and I'm not even a fan of his, just enough SnK characters butchered already... Poor Jean :'/ )
