This WAS enjoyable. LOL at all these over reactions over how 'bad' it is

I heard about some of the changes and deviations this took from the anime before watching this... I was expecting something bad.... what I ended up watching was something still fairly enjoyable and honestly I don't understand the hate...

was this better than the anime? no...

but lets not hold the anime up as high up in comparison... lets not forget it also has its flaws and isn't even as great as some of you are making out.... first off the animes pacing is horrible.. the amount of stopping mid battle so someone can have a 20 minute conversation in situations where clearly its not possible to do so is ridiculous, armen is incredibly annoying.. and to a lesser extent so is eren... while Mikasa is nothing more than another rey ayanami trope.

The film changes did rectify these situations at least.. even if being at 90 minutes it was forcibly rather than intentionally... its still a good thing.

That's not to say the film is without its own flaws... the exclusion of erens mothers death scene was perplexing to me... its one of the best scenes in the anime and explains why eren is so against the titans.. he lacks that motivation in the film. the scene as to why sasha becomes known as 'potato girl' in the first place was one of the funniest things ive seen :P ...bummed that they didn't show it in the film. the baby titan?.... yeah that was silly. no captain levi in favour or some weird shimisaga or whatever his name was... and whilst im also not too hot on the change of dynamic between eren and mikasa I can see why they did it... mikasa doesn't seem as much of one of those endless rei ayanami clones now..

I honestly don't mind the change of Europeans to all Asians... how else were they going to make this?

So yes while agree with most of you that this wasn't as good as the anime.. its still decent and thoroughly enjoyable.

I certainly enjoyed this way more than any of the mainstream Hollywood superhero/blockbuster films ive seen lately. and I cant wait for part 2.

its not as good as the anime but some of the over reactions on this board are just incredible.. if this is truly one of the worst films you have seen than clearly... you haven't seen many films.

reply

100% agreeing with you. The anime drags its ass way too much. Also don't care for most of the characters there either. Cool premise, but somewhat annoying.

And this is the kind of person who likes this terrible excuse for a movie.

little boy, pull yourself together. You sound like a child who lives inside his grannys' basement, inside a cage, being fed peanuts, with an old tv set that only shows Attack on Titan but not for the reasons you think. Now you love it, but in truth you are being tortured by your sadistic granny and it shows.

And you love it.

This is you:

"Oh noes... people actually don'tt think my favorite anime is like, dah best, like, evah, like, they mustn't have seen it. Like, no way. I hate them all"

Sad.

I didn't recommend anything child. And I don't care what you think or not. It's indifferent. Now, go brush your teeth and off to bed. Sleepy time for you.

This movie leaves out major events and major characters.

It is not my favorite, and i am not even a fan of anime.

But the story in the anime/manga is so good that i had to tell people.

You, on the other hand, are telling people that the anime is not good, and the movie is.

You are an idiot.

Because i have seen all 25 episodes of season 1, read up to #60 in manga and i have seen the pathetic attempt of a movie.

You have not. Otherwise you have proven that by now.

its pretty widely regarded anyway that the attack on titan anime is a gateway or entrance level anime for people who are new to the genre.. it is also more than likely that the majority of people who highly rate it are those whom this is the first anime they have seen.. I'm pretty sure that's the case with this barney guy :P

and if not... and you are determined to stay in and be a sad *beep* at least watch some more anime... the way you love AOT is just weird... its good sure... but its not that great..

I am intrigued now..

what is your top 10 anime.. no.. let me make it easy for you because I don't think you've seen that many.. give me your top 5 anime.....

reply

it would be easier if you asked "which anime have you ever watched". The answer will be AOT.

The again, if you ask "name your favorite song" it will be AOT

Favorite food? AOT

Favorite color? AOT

... and so on.

So the gauge for who is correct about if this movie sucks or is good is if you watch anime?

That is ludicrous!

The bottom line is this: the story from the anime/manga of Attack on Titan is amazing.

The movie is something else and it sucks.

End of story.

If you support the movie, you have not watched the anime. It is just that simple.

reply

I enjoyed the movie.

I have no experience of the other forms of this material, this is my first foray into it so maybe that's why I can't judge it too harshly. I just happened to see a trailer for this about huge monsters attacking humanity and it peaked my interest.

The movie is oddly paced and a lot of things are not explained so you just have to go along with it. I knew it had other source material so I figured if I wanted to know more I could find it out myself, but a movie shouldn't force you to do this.

Does anyone know if this is just a standalone film or is part of a bigger set of movies?

I really want to know more about the huge titan that kicks the wall at the start and what it's like outside of the walls!

reply

yeah it was oddly paced I think mostly because the skipping of certain things in the anime.

if you watch a little past the credits there is a trailer for part 2... I think its going to be three films.

reply

"and a lot of things are not explained so you just have to go along with it."

Those things were explained in the anime --- just one reason why this movie is so awful.

reply

I know right?

The anime was okay, I enjoyed it, but it's not exactly high art we're talking about(I get to listen to my friends who read the comics before the cartoon and they regularly dump on the cartoon). The movie was lots of fun, and they managed to condense like half a season into 90 minutes which is impressive, I'm amazed they were able to make it as coherent as they did.

Sure there were things that didn't make sense, but anyone who's watched the anime shouldn't be expecting things that make sense. They should be watching for cool wire moves and giants that gobble people up.

reply

"The movie was lots of fun, and they managed to condense like half a season into 90 minutes which is impressive ..."

No. It is criminal. You people pretend like you have watched the anime when you clearly have not. They removed major characters and major events and this is now a completely different story.

The only difference between the manga and anime is the manga drops the F bomb from time to time and is more violent. The stories are the same.

The movie giants look like regular people in slow motion. It's retarded. Probably like you.

reply

even though I do somewhat agree... I already stated some major events the film skipped on.. and the captain levi replacement character is something I didn't like..

I also have to say that telling people they haven't watched the anime just because they don't agree with you is extremely childish.

the anime IS over rated.. even though I like it a lot it wouldn't make my top 10 list.. hell it wouldn't even make my top 20.

this film had its faults.. but it IS still enjoyable.. the last anime live adaptation I watched was death note and those films where far superior.. but that said it doesn't make the AOT film bad.. I admit there where things it shouldn't have skipped on.. and they should kept captain levi.. but you just strike me as another one of those endless people who ... as you put it.. 'criminally' over rate the anime and under rate the movie..

reply

"the anime IS over rated"

The anime is UNDERRATED. It is still only known by a small minority. You are overrating the movie.

I seriously doubt you have even watched the anime at this point, you act as if the cuts are minor when they are very major.

This adaptation is indeed criminal and a reboot is warranted.

Why did the filmmakers change the colossal titan kicking in the door to him kicking in the wall?

Lol. I enjoy making fun of idiots like him. But yeah, to the Ignore list he goes.

I bet he's 12 yo and AOT is the only anime ever watched. If he were to watch the good old ones from the late 70's early 80's he'd have a heart attack.

in all honesty i don't get his argument.... is he trying to offend people by saying 'you haven't watched the anime?'... because its not even offensive lol!

and yeah i agree i think AOT is the ONLY anime he's seen ... thats why he loves it so much.. he doesnt realise theres way better anime out there.

reply

I am showing that you are not a credible source. You have not watched the anime, and you are just trying to get people to watch the movie.

reply

it's the same moronic attitude from the fantards in the Prometheus Board. If you don't love that movie as much as they do you are labeled a moron, sock, troll, idiot, hater, etc. Usually the fanwakers will say "you didn't get it" as though there is anything to get and will do a hell lot of mental gymnastics to come up with any kind of defense for the movie they defend as though their lives depend on it. It's hilariously bad.
But I honestly believe those people are mentaly ill. The level of obsession is pumped to the Nth degree. Very unhealthy.

I can't deny I enjoy making fun of them.

As to other anime, I recently watched the Space Battle Ship Yamato [Star Blazers in America] live-action movie from 2010. They did a great movie out of that one.

Old anime from the early 80's to early 90's are generally better story wise. The art has developed quite a bit and most of those decades art is laughable by todays' standards, but plot wise and overall characters depth, nothing beats them.

I was and still am quite unimpressed by AOTs' story. There is nothing really new there. The art is fantastic though, but it drags its ass around way too much without development. I found my self not caring for the characters one bit. Find them way too bland for the concept. The Shock value given by the Titans is pretty good though and the movie did quite ok by making it somewhat more gruesome. I liked that.

But other than that... meh.

yeah thats pretty much how i feel about it as well.. to me it shares similarities and somewhat parallels 'neon genesis evangelion'.. except its nowhere near as good as that.

reply

"I was and still am quite unimpressed by AOTs' story."

Since neither of you have actually discussed what that story is ... it is safe to assume you are both lying and neither of you have even seen it.

reply

Exactly what I thought as well. "Neon Genesis" popped to mind. 

Swap Mechas for Titans and that's it, even the premise is the same: world gone to *beep* boy gets recruited by organization, fights Angels/Titans inside a Mecha/Titan and it's done.

But yeah, Evangelion has a lot more character development and overall thematics that AOT doesn't have.

Macross was also a great show back then, Space Battle Ship Yamato, The Rose of Versailles [that show was heavy. Can't believe they allowed kids watching it back then], Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The mysterious cities of Gold [great family show], Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya... they were great concepts for the time and a lot of anime nowadays drink directly from them.

There are some interesting new ones, but overall they seem to lack the depth the old ones had. Most are tamed down quite a bit in the themes they offer.

if you even bothered to read my initial post you will see I made a point of highlighting the detrimental effect it had by NOT including erens mothers death scene... so no.. I am not acting like the cuts were minor at all.. its just it doesn't bother me as much as you.. I guess maybe because I don't love the anime as much as yourself...

that said though.. if james Cameron ever does get round to doing the battle angel film.. I can see me caring much more about how that turns out and if it deviates from the manga too much I can see me getting angry about it.. because that's a manga I truly love.. AOT just isn't.

reply

You keep attempting to deflect the question at hand: the changes from the anime are so major that the movie is not the same core story, and it is this core story that makes the anime/manga so good.

So far you have shown that you have NOT even watched this anime. Let's prove this even more. Answer this simple question:

Why did the filmmakers change the colossal titan kicking in the door to him kicking in the wall?

reply

I just got done watching it and I really enjoyed it I took it for what it was and didn't try to compare it to the anime and just treated it as a Giant Monster movie by Toho. I don't mind at all them being Asians it fit with the genre it's a Toho movie so that's cool with me. It did really miss on a lot of opportunity from the anime source material but it was a pretty good entertaining Giant Monster horror movie.
