I'll probably disappoint everyone when I say that I LOVE the 2004 Appleseed movie.. its not the best anime but its what I enjoyed the most.. ive certainly watched it more times than any other anime...
for me it doesn't suffer from most of the flaws anime generally has.. even the films.. it has great voice acting in whatever language you watch it, is brilliantly paced and has a great story that's simple but also deep at the same time. and the action scenes and art style are amazing!
Thanks! Yeah it would.. a live action of the 2004 movie anyway.. I prefer that vision of it so much more than the original manga...
... oh I also forgot to mention that deunan and briareos in that version are honestly 2 of the most likeable main characters I have ever seen in anime.. I love them both.. and did I mention it also has an AWESOME soundtrack!
the sequel ex machine was a disappointment though.... although the opening scene was amazing! lets not even bother mentioning the crappy appleseed alpha though:P
In terms of series my fave has to be ghost in the shell Stand alone complex.
I guess I'm just a shirow masamune fan.. or at least the characters and universes hes created as GiTS SAC is just based on his works and appleseed 2004 isn't exactly the same as the source material.. but I prefer it :)
Appleseed is a great anime, períod. Ghost in the Shell is also one of my favorite animes. A bit close to Blade Runner [understandable] but you gotta love sexy hooker robots - and the art is freekin' beautiful.
I don't have a specific creator in mind. I'm more interested in concepts, and one finds different ones throughout the entire anime sub-genres.
Tetsuo is also a cool anime - though only in the 3rd act it becomes really interesting. Ever watched the 3 Tetuso movies? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 If you like a mix of David Lynch and David Cronenberg, check those out [the story line is basically the same in all three of them, feels more like a rehash of the same idea, but it's the concept that really matters]. The anime follows the same thing.
For a bit more naughty spice, check Chôjin densetsu Urotsukidôji [Legend of the Overfiend]. I believe it's 4 movies, but the first one is the only that really matters. It's twisted as fyck [literally]

ive seen the first 3 discs of ergo proxy and liking it.. I have to get round to getting the last 3 at some point.. cyberpunk is my fave sub genre so I guess that's why I love shirow stuff... and why battle angel is my fave manga ever.. I want so much more anime from that than just the OVA from ages ago.. don't think james Cameron is ever gonna get round to it :( I recently got the first part of mardock scramble still yet to watch maybe ill watch it tonight..
and ive seen overfiend.. its umm... interesting :P
I find it interesting that on this board no one else has replied... maybe this question on the attack on titan anime would get more response... maybe.. but this is further proof that most people who have seen attack on titan have suddenly just rode the anime bandwagon and actually haven't seen ANY other anime...
I'm guessing most users here are young and have watched very little anime or read the mangas. Can't expect much really. On the other hand the animation these days are a ton better then the old ones [with some obvious exceptions] and the general tone is lower than it was before. Anime used to deal with much more serious stuff and had a pretty damn good way to immerse the viewer in the overall story. I remember watching some anime with the entire family when I was a kid, as an example. It used to be more like a soap opera than an animation [almost]. But the times have changed. Fast paced action and gruesomeness is demanded more than actual emotions. Is tough to compete with the shock element.

Urotsukidoji is interesting (at least the 1st series) as it would be a pretty good anime even if they cut the all the hardcore stuff out. The plot was actually decent, war between demon beasts and man beasts. 3 realms and everyone seeking the chosen one (the Chojin) who would bring an end to the conflict. Some wild fight scenes. And the sex scenes actual worked for the plot, if a tad graphic (by tad I mean insanely over done lol) The follow ups were weak though.
Another good risque anime (though not as bad as Urotsukidoji) with a similar plot is Supernatural Beast City.
I have to check out Saint Seiya. I've been watching Anime for the longest though I haven't watched everything. It's like sensory overload trying to keep up with it all. So in the last several years I've just checked out the series that come to America via Toonami or get referrals from friends.
I started with old school anime like Robotech and Fist of the North star. Loved Record of Lodess War and Bastard. Bubblegum Crisis was awesome (great music too). Ninja Scroll was one of my old school favorites. Which is probably why I love Naruto now. I don't think I've ever seen a more likable character and actually had me almost shedding a tear at the end of the Pain arc, which was the best of the series IMHO. I guess I'm a bit of a Shonen fan. Dragon Ball is a guilty pleasure. Love Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, though I got into One Piece late and am catching up.
My all time favorite anime movie has to be Akira. Thouhg I do wish they'd remake it into a series as the Manga had a lot more.
Saint Seiya is like Dragon Ball's fighting contests but more to the point. It's interesting because it tackles greek mythology [fighters correspond to the Zodiac and constellations] and has a pretty good plot to it.
Naruto's Pain episodes were the best to me as well. Great story and I wouldn't mind if the entire anime was like his fight with Nine Tails. Great animation.
Bleach is my favorite recent shonen anime. Has a very interesting story, and the fillers aren't bad in themselves [the Zampakuto arc was very cool], but I'll be damned, Aizen became my favorite anime Enemy. That mofo planed shyt from the start. Too bad the anime won't come out again. The new arc is interesting, but it became boring.
Akira is badass for sure.
Nowadays I'm more into the shorter anime. 12 episodes tops, with the exception of Jojo's Bizarre adventure [that thing is outrageously hilarious]
For a time I was watching Fairy Tail, but I lost interest.

Yeah I wish Bleach had gotten to the Quincy story line. Hopefully they can adapt them into a series of animated movies.
I'm just starting Fairy Tale and also Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple. I liked Soul Eater and had hopes for Blue Exorcist but it seemed to end strangely. I hope they bring it back. Space Dandy was a fun silly distraction too though I had to be in the right mood to watch it. I still have to finish watching Kekkaishi.
I don't know about best but AoT was one of the first series I saw and I do think it deservedly ranks high. After that I kind of got hooked on Crunchyroll streaming.
Some other recent favorites... 1. Ushio and Tora 2. Parasyte (it's like John Carpenter's Thing set in Japan) 3. Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon (title is way more suggestive than the actual anime) 4. Gate 5. World Trigger (prob my favorite of the current simulcasts) 6. Fairy Tail (one of the few I can be reasonably confident it's ok for my 8 year old to watch). 7. Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutoro (just straight up hilarious and bizarre) 8. Hunter X Hunter (might be my favorite)
This is a difficult question as it is a kin to the idea of picking out the best American movie.
My personal favorites are the following:
Bubblegum Crisis (original) not 2040 Magic Knight Rayearth Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Berserk Souleater Claymore Puella Magi Madoka Magica Castle in the Sky Spirited Away Those who hunt elves Gunbuster
I can go on and on but those are Anime’s I have watched repeatedly.
I own Grave of Fireflies and honestly am still not in a rush to watch it. I have watched Barefoot Gen and that is incredibly difficult to watch as its based on a real life story.
Hellsing: Ultimate is my favorite, though there are a bunch of others I like. Basilisk, Highschool of the DEAD, Dragon Ball Z, Gurren Lagann, and, of course, Attack On Titan. Just to name a few.
