Will an American reboot follow?
That seems to happen with many Japanese movies.
shareI always got the sense that the Titans WERE Americans.... that this whole thing is an allegory about us Yankees consuming up all the natural resources, taking advantage and invading the less developed nations.
In the cartoon version, the Titans look Caucasian, definitely different than the Japanese town-folk. It would be quite ironic if America rebooted this property.
That said, it does appear in the live-action version, they steered away from making the monsters look Caucasian, probably because they want international appeal.

no way we'd let irony hinder a reboot of something.
Plot hole - Aspect of a film that is misunderstood or missed while using your smart phone.
I have no clue where you get that from with characters named Jean, Bertholdt, Reiner, Armin, Krista etc... they are obviously not asians for the most part.
As for the rest, my guess is the titans are just weapons of another country or something like that. Or maybe experimental tools like in Claymore and the town we see is full of people that are experimented upon... All in all there's no way it's the only human town (even if that's what we are told in the beginning of the show). Because of that, titans themselves cannot be a symbol of "evil humans". Their owners though... probably!
In the manga/anime most of the people are non Asian including Erin and Armin. Mikasa is the only one of Asian decent (Half Asian on her mothers side).
I got the sense from the Anime (I haven't really read much of the manga) that the Titans are the souls of the dead returned to torment the people and the world might be some kind of purgatory. That's why you see titans of different ages and styles in general. Erin's Titan reflected him very well and the female Titan later reflected her human form as well. In the movie, the baby titan could be the baby that was killed.
In the Anime, they are all Caucasian. Only Mikasa is oriental. They made it pretty clear during the backstory for her that Oriental race was rare or nearly considered extinct as a race.
shareSeems like they're mostly based on German heritage:

What are you talking about? There is only one Japanese character in the whole series EVERYONE else in the series is a white person.
And you know it's true because SpaceMonkey -> said so.
I would even wager that the characters in the context of the series speak English, not Japanese. If all Asians are dead that would leave English as the most commonly spoken language in the world and I believe it's the most diversely spoken language in the world as well so It'd be reasonable that if all the characters aren't exclusively German and have other European races mixed in as all that's left of humanity, English would be the desired language.
And you know it's true because SpaceMonkey -> said so.
The only thing "American" about the titans is that one of them ate the Hiana character played by Ayame Misaki. And wanted to eat her too, but mostly between her legs.
shareI kind of hope so... If it gets a hollywood movie it could have a bigger budget to get better effects (not that the ones in this are bad) and I'd be able to understand it without subtitles :P But i also wouldn't put it past hollywood to *beep* it up, like ey did eith The Lasat Airbender
Btw, most of the characters are meant to be european, hence the last names Yaeger, Kirstein and Boldt.
Unlike Dragonball and many other anime/mangas. This could very well be the best Japanese manga for the Hollywood to make it since Mikasa is the only asian (Japanese ofc) left on Earth.
shareThat we know ;) Remember there is more beyond the wall
shareI say Full Metal Alchemist would be awesome as a Hollywood franchise. Action, adventure, war, politics. And most of the characters are not Asian so it would be easy to make in Hollywood. I'd say Joss Whedon would be my choice for director. Though James Cameron would do just as well, maybe even Peter Jackson.
AOT would be fun but I'm not sure if American audiences would get into it as it's a little more over the top than your typical stories. I say maybe after another Godzilla or Pacific Rim movie comes out and if Zombies are still popular then it might work.
Let's hope so. If it was made in Hollywood the Titans would at least look passable and maybe they'd get some decent actors. Heck, they might even be more faithful to the source material.
This movie was horrendous imho.

I think this story would be hard to adapt for a big budget American reboot. A lot of the story would appeal but I think there are some elements that just won't translate well with American audiences and would come off as sill. The post apocalyptic and war time themes, the bleak tone as well as the concept of the giant zombie like creatures might all be elements that appeal and help a movies chances of success but the nightmarish and surreal quality of the Titans themselves would be hard to translate. It works in anime because it's so surreal. It really feels like you're watching a nightmare every time a battle is going down, and animation style has a huge impact on whether something so strange would work on screen.
The movie would have to be ridiculously stylized to make something like that not seem as campy, but if you make it too stylized it may be hard to keep that bleak post apocalyptic tone without making the movie feel melodramatic, boring and bland.
I can't even really think of a director that I think could make a good version of this movie... maybe the dude that did Pacific Rim, as that was pretty much the same concept but I'm not sure that even he could make the Titans feel as frighting as they do in the anime.
Overall I thought this movie was pretty good about the tone and not making the titans feel too ridiculous... maybe the Wachowski's could make something decent with this material.
And you know it's true because SpaceMonkey -> said so.
No, This is one of those best leave as is movies. It doesn't get any hotter than Ayame Misaki.
