5/10
It was some time since i now watched them but some of it stuck.
In short: A classical story takes center stage and revolves around rising to become a hero. Too fight a monster you must become one.
It brings back elements of moviemaking not seen lately and if you are a fan of Godzilla this will most likely atleast keep you entertained. Think asian coming of age meets action with a deeper symbolism (think John Grisham with the individual struggles/trials exchanged for that subtext/symbolism).
In long:
Let's start off with the make or break element for these types of movies that heavily rely on effects - the effects. Regarding CGI it is not always up to par, but it's neither horrible. The overlay and use of greenscreen makes the titans come to life quite well and the lifeless/emotionlacking faces are well suited. The grit and gore also works somewhat to help stitch it together and there are a couple of scenes that are quite well made by todays standards.
The main effect that is brought back has not seen since (the series starting with Honey i shrunk the kids - 1989) in the same scale (though not too uncommon as a smaller part of the special effects portfolio).
Regarding the actors it could be alot better, but most of them do end up making somewhat ok performances, not good but not very bad either.
The sound isn't always there. Some of the shots as when look over the fields is quite good. In general it is a mixed bag.
Pro's
• Nothing ventured nothing gained (hard movie to shoot)
• Some of the effects were suitable
• Subplot/symbolism
Con's
• Never reached any proper high's (yes, some semi-emotional moments but still hit short)
• The rationale of some of the characters could be questioned.
• Other effects were not suitable
[If you are allergic to politics don't read this about the subplot/symbolism]
End notes (on subplot/symbolism):
Titans (read; powercenters/powerplayers) - the giants, relying on animal instincts - the primal force and a clear nudge towards aristocracy (hierarchy by strength).
Nation states (read; society) erected walls (boundries which were broken down by the giants), laws and gave rise to an aristocracy (human cities went skyward). Now the people still bound by laws and society (the human bond) must fight back to defend the nation state against the hungry titans (read; elite) to save what is left. The saving grace is what you exspect it to be.
You can allways kill the titans but still retain the government.
Ignorance is only a bliss if you haven't reached awareness.
My imdb posts are getting altered.
