Really loving these movies critiquing the 1 percent

The Purge series

13 Sins

Is this a new trend in thrillers? If so, then I love it.

I definitely see what you're linking but feel like the Purge is slightly different than the other two just because it still embraces middle classed people along with the affluent and doesn't "exploit" but rids society of the poor. But ya, totally see what you mean.

I just can't remember thrillers or 'scary' movies being a commentary on real life. I really think this could a different trend in the genre and could refresh it.

It's actually very transparently lame, tired, cliched and boring. Especially when you consider that Hollywood is where you will find a huge chunk of the obscenely rich.

I gave this a 7/10 because it did entertain me and I really appreciate lower-budget films that have good actors and try hard. I am quite forgiving of that genre.

But three things nearly nuked this entire movie: (1) the fact that the Dad was a previous winner of the game was just forehead-slappingly atrocious -- there is such a thing as one (useless) surprise too many (2) the scene with the dead guy in the diner was so over the top stupid and unbelievable that I almost passed out -- and this was only challenge #6, making you wonder just how insipid this movie was going to get (3) that "rich people" were behind the whole thing. Only a supernatural explanation (the Devil, etc) would have made any sense given the omniscience of the host and all the unbelievable crap that went on. It sure seemed they were going that way with "sins" in the title and the map with Rome and "how do they monitor?" And it would have been fine. The "rich"? Get bent, Hollywood, seriously.

Neat movie. Glad I saw it. The anti-remake snobs can also get bent, by the way.

I really can't argue your points here. But wasn;t "the rich" , the 1%, really just another way of pointing to the Illuminati or the Freemasons or whatever global superpower is in play here? One could ultimately surmise that it is the AntiChrist running the whole show which would then fall in line with the supernatural angle.

it would be nice if this film had a sequel that explored some of the background and delved deeper into the mythology behind the whole thing.

I also found it a bit ridiculous that the Winnebago guy had amassed so much information on this "game" and then for some reason just spills his guts to this detective - as if a cop (a member of the power structure) is someone he could trust.
